is any one running a MSD coil with the stock TFI?

The coil in particular is a Blaster HVC I got left over from my Ramcharger Ignition.

G's Baja Bronco,

I am running an MSD coil, MSD wires, MSD cap and rotor with Motorcraft plugs and stock TFI and have had no problems.

Do you have this particular coil?

Called MSD TECH and he said NO, I will burn up my TFI, I need a 6A box, which I have also. I plan to start the engine with the stock coil, then add the Box and coil and in case it dies, limp back with the stock setup.;D

G's Baja Bronco,

No, I don't have that particular item. I have the MSD replacement for an '88 Ford with TFI.

Just looked at the instructions and, as usual, the ignition companies have inconsistent recommendations.
It says right there in the first paragraphs that this coil "may also be used with stock and other aftermarket ignition systems."

It also is inconsistent in that MSD's instructions usually include just how to hook it up to most stock systems. In this case however, they only show how to hook it up to an MSD box.

So? On one hand it sounds like it's good to go. On the other though, it seems vague at best.
BUT, your tech guy may know something that's come out since the release of the instructions, which seems unlikely too, since they're fairly recent.

I would call them back to confirm and ask the tech exactly why it's incompatible with TFI and if so, why it says "stock is ok" right in the instructions.
If he can give you a blow-by-blow as to why it won't work, you have not choice to to assume he's correct for now, and get a different coil. There are plenty of reasons certain coils might not be compatible with certain ignitions, so get him to say why this is the case this time.
After all, what's a TFI module cost these days???

He said it required 400 volts on the primary, and the stock ford only put out 12vdc, sounded like he really wanted to sell me a MSD 6a module, "it puts out the 400 volt required".

I had read about the "stock" on the instructions, I will try to call again later.

While he very well could be right, I don't know of any "stock" system that is a CD ignition. And that's what it takes to put out 400 primary volts.
Any Capacitive Discharge setup can do it of course, but I think they're all aftermarket. If not though, then that's probably what "stock" meant in the instructions.
Could be wrong, but it's worth checking.

Did you run it on a CD setup previously? Perhaps with your MSD module?
