muffler advice - need to tone down a bit

Looking for some advice on mufflers. I am currently running flowmaster 40's, but the noise has gotten to be a bit much. Looking to tone it down a bit. Running headers and 2 1/2" pipes. Want to be able to cruise at 70 and not listen to exhaust the whole time.

Thoughts?

dual flowmaster 50s here and works and sounds great. I have the same set-up, except the 418 stroker.

If you already have duals, you can have a crossover pipe added. It's cheap, improves performance, and quiets it down a lot.

When I had my exhaust done at the muffler shop, I told them I wanted the largest muffler that they could fit under it. It is round and looks just like the original muffler and is pretty quite.

I have duals right now, with a crossover pipe installed. I could go with something larger but I was trying to stay in a similar footprint since I have this nicely tucked up tight.

My solution was simple. I kept the loudness of the exhaust just added a bigger stereo to mask it on the highway ;D

Just have turn downs added on the tail pipes. IIRC there was a quiet option on a few years for quiet exhaust that was just turn down on the tail pipe.

Hooker Aero chamber. Ford crate motor w/ E303 cam and BC headers equal the best sounding exhaust I've had yet. I hate Flowmaster (and yes I've used them) and I had to replace the Magnaflow from BC's exhaust kit cause I was tired of setting car alarms off a 1/4 mile away so I took a chance with Hooker. I have since put one on my '05 FX4 too.

I am running the Dynomax race magnums. I am not sure they even make these anymore but they have a very low deep tone until you really get on the gas then they sound off loud and deep... You cant even hear them cruising down the road.

Another option is to get a set of Procomp muds like I have... they are so loud you wouldnt have to worry about the exaust.

Keep the ideas coming.

I went the stereo route first and have that covered. 2 10's and 6 speakers already installed. It will cover the exhaust but they neighbors aren't too happy.

I dissagree with the guys saying to go to another Flowmaster. "FLOW" generally means "not quiet". I'd recommend you find a pair of OEM mufflers from a truck or a jeep or something with similar dimensions to what you have now.

You will restrict the flow for sure but "flow" and "quiet" don't necessarily go together.

If you take it to a muffler shop tell them you want it to be quiet like a cadillac - see if they will let you try a few different mufflers while its on the lift to let you get the sound you desire. This way you wont have to guess and you wont be stuck with a muffler thats too loud (ask me how I know or just take a look in my garage %) ).

Any opinions on the Pro Flow mufflers? I hear they are a tad louder than stock but quieter than Flow masters and Magnaflows...

I called flowmaster when I put my exhaust together. I gave them all my engine specs and what it would be used for. They told me a single 3" Super 40 would be my best choice. It helped out my bottom end over the dual exhaust I had before!

As far as the sound.........it sounds mean when at idle and when you stomp on it but when I am cruising the sound smooths out and I can hardly hear it.

I have a pair of muffler I am removing cause I think my Bronco is too quiet. I am having a pair of Flowmaster Hushpower installed next week to make my bronco not sound like a minivan. We will see if the Hushpowers are too loud for a daily driver. Not many people run them so its hard to get any good reviews. I have ran a 40 series on a truck that had cats, the 40 was too loud when I had dumps on it, but was perfect when I had the exhaust ran out of the back of the truck.
