Can anyone explain what the advantages/disadvantages are in the different muffler designes? i.e. 1:1, 2:1, 2:2 when comparing the number of Inlets:Outlets.

Some are desgined due to space limitations. Instead of running 2 mufflers you get a 2into one but still get decent flow like a 1-1 muffler. The 2 in/out mufflers are about the same but allow you to run 2 exit pipes like you have dual exhuast.

again a lot depends on how much space you have availible to run your exhuast.

It is just the number of inlets and outlets.
If you want twin mufflers and true duel exhaust, you want a pair if 1:1
If you want to avoid a Y-pipe and want a single exhaust then a 2:1 will do.
Want duel exhaust but only one muffler? 2:2 works.

A lot of what I listed as "want" is often "need" out of necessity. It also follows what a lot of manufacturers do now as well. Factory duel exhaust into a single muffler, the 2:1 is common so that is what a lot of aftermarket does to simply match what will fit in a factory location and plumbing. Customer wants duel exhaust, get a 2 out and just route the second pipe.

Most of it comes down to packaging. What can you fit in the space alloted. How are the pipes arranged coming into the space. What does the customer want coming out the back?

My 98 Camaro DD has a 1:2 muffler transverse mounted right behind the rear diff. Kinda stupid if you ask me, to have a y-pipe up front, a single 2 3/4" pipe to the 1:2 muffler, then 2 tailpipes, just so it can look like dual exhaust. I'm getting ready to redo a bunch of stuff on it, and will be replacing the 1:2 muffler with a 1:1 and single tailpipe.

The Z28s have faux duals. The SSs have a single. Oh how I wish I could put true duals on my '99!;)
