Just some input since I'm not sure you are getting correct data.

That is a picture of a limited slip unit. The earlier models do not have screws to hold the two halves together. My 68 had a factory limited slip unit and it had no screws, the earlier ones were called equa-lok or something and are slightly different. The only way to tell is to pull it apart and count the number of 'tabs' on the clutches. If there are 4 tabs it is the later trac-lok (which has the screws) if it has 5 tabs then it is the earlier equa-lok (no screws). I'm not sure what the strength difference is but I do know the clutches in the equa-lok are much larger than the trac-lok clutches.

The roll pins I think you are referring to hold the spider gear shaft in. Once you get the 2 halves apart, you have access to the rear of these pins to drive them out. Unless you have gear damage though, there is no reason to remove these pins to replace the clutches.

Also, as mentioned above, the brakes and bearing size determine the 'size' of your axle.

Hopefully that makes sense.

That makes more sense than anyone has made so far, I have researched this through and through but I've encountered 20 year old gear oil and mine was twice as reched so I wanna say it was never changed.
So I really need to either change it out or rebuild huh, I've never had a good locker so maybe I'll just work my ass off and replace w a trutrac that I orig. had planned.
Kinda seemd like I stumped a lot of people w this one including myself, that being said, thanks for clearing a lot of things up for me, it is all becoming clear what needs to be done
Anyone got a locker that would work on the street they will sell me or recommend?

Wheels,

I could not see the pic while at work (they block stuff). That's an equa loc I spoke of in an earlier post (maybe the other thread you had going). It's the LS version Ford had before the T-loc and they are very weak IMO. I've seen several shattered as in cracked in half a the weak point around the bolt holes.

I wouldn't put that back in my rig. The rebuild kit is $130 bucks plus shipping and all you get are the clutches.

Put that $130 towards a 4 pin T-loc. T-loc's come in two version, 2 pin and 4 pin.

So , how much does one of those 4 pin T-loc's used? Where can I find one?
And if you were in my shoes what would you do at this point Timmy?
I am into my rear axle project for 500$ (around) so far and spending another 800 on a d44 w disks that's in really good shape. Basically I don't think I will be happy without a trutrac. I plan on doin some wheelin so I gotta get this thing dialed

Now you know why I wanted for so many years before I took the plunge. My budget just couldn't take the hit.

If it were me, I would do the following provide this is a street rig with some mud and trails on weekends. You have to ask yourself if the extra $$$ is worth lockers front and rear....

Ford 9
28 spline T-lock 4 pin $300
4.11 gear set $155 (USA Standard brand)
Bearing kit (master kit) of your choice $150
Solid spacer (to replace the crush sleeve) $30
OR 9" Third Member, 4.11 T-loc New 28 Spline $1050

D44
OEM Dana/Spicer trac-loc (for your gear set remember there is a brake) $270
4.09 gear set $150 (USA Standard brand)
Dana 44 Master Overhaul Kit (for the year D44 you have) $240

Prices based off one of the venders sites.

That's how I went about re-gearing last summer. You can save a couple bucks by getting thick gears for the front and using the carrier you have but you will need to buy the clutch kit and rebuild it. I decided to just buy a new carrier ready to go and save the hassle of rebuilding it. I reviewed the instructions online and was like not worth my time.

All prices plus shipping.......

Hey,

There is some great information here. I may have read it too quickly, though.

I might be parting out a '72 project Bronco. The axles appear to be in good condition. I'm not sure how to determine the details about each for listing. I'll be able to spin the pinion to get the gear ratio; but, I'm not sure I can tell anything more from the exterior.

I will provide the VIN from the glovebox; however, I'm not sure if the original axles stayed with the body, so I'd like to confirm.

Thanks

Jeff

I've had good luck with the older EquaLoc posis. They were the factory LS for 9" EBs, Mustangs, etc etc back in the 60s and early 70s. I wouldn't thrash 38s with one but I wouldn't run away from it either. Drag raced a few of 'em pretty hard back "in the day" and never broke one. That said, EB wheeling buddy of mine split the Equaloc in his rig ...split around the bolts holes as someone previously mentioned.

Just my .02.

Even if you rebuild the factory Equa Loc it won't perform well off road. I rebuilt my Factory Trac Loc and after one trail ride I ended up pulling everything back out and installing a real locker. If you want traction, get a real locker.;)

Unless I missed it and your correct on having the small bearing, change to a large bearing rear and go from there if you plan to wheel your rig especially on the Rubicon. The small bearing will be a limitation.
