Need Photo of stock 2 to 1 exhaust routing

I've considered the CJ Pony Parts replacement of the stock exhaust system, but I can only see using the front section. So in effect I'd be paying 400 bucks for that part. I never liked the round mufflers Ford used on EBs and most all 4.9, 5.0, and 5.8 light trucks. They're too loud. The tail pipe with the CJ kit doesn't exit where I want it to either. To have a system fabricated I need to know exactly where the driver's side pipe crosses under the drive train. My memory is that it crossed in front of the transfer case, but how far? I also remember it came close to the front drive shaft on full droop. I'll use the original routing unless it can be improved on. Ford did use that configuration for 11 years, so I guess THEY couldn't improve on it. A photo of the stock type system would be greatly appreciated. The main issue is how far fore or aft they put the cross over.

I kinda went through the same situation. I was going to buy the CJ kit because I wanted a stockish type 2 into 1 system. I wanted the simplicity of it but I didn't want a stock muffler.

Anyone else that has a 2 into 1 you need a lift (Duffs) or it is two pipes that combine at the muffler instead of being a Y pipe.

I searched the forum for a while and found references going back a number of years to a shop called Precision that was making a stock system. I called them, and they made me a stock routing 2 into 1 system with a flowmaster deltaflow 50. Instead of stock size pipe, they made it in 2 1/4". The shop seems to specialize in old Ford stuff and I think they made exhausts for one of the big vendors for a while.

I've bolted it up and I'm happy with it. I haven't ran it yet.

I paid $400 for it with the flowmaster and brackets.

BC makes a 2 into 1 exhaust that goes into the muffler instead of a Y. They have a header and stock manifold version. Last time I checked you could also order it without a muffler too.

This is what the BC 2-1 exhaust looks like. I thought I had an installed picture but I dont. I can get one if you need me to but it will take a few days. Just let me know.

That is the BC Headers and their 2-1. The muffler is a walker 21400 (https://www.amazon.com/Walker-21400-Quiet-Flow-Stainless-Muffler/dp/B000CLORZ6). I like it nice and quite but it is huge. so if you have a 4-link or anything like that it will not fit.

If memory serves me correctly the drivers side crossover is at the same location as the dana 20 front output shaft.

I don't see where the driver's side pipe crosses over to the pass. side in the BC kit as it's on the floor and Steve83's diagram has no reference points on an EB drive train. A better description of what I need is the distance between the back edge of the cross over pipe to the front edge of the cross member supporting the transfer case. This would give me the location fore and aft of the cross over. The height as measured below the floor will be determined by the need to clear the front drive shaft at full droop.
2 pipes into a muffler ties me to a particular muffler type. I plan on using the quietest muffler I can, limited only by length and 1 in 1 out has the best selection. I'm also not running headers. The OE stock exhaust was 1 3/4" ID and it worked well with my 351 so a 2" system will be adequate.

From FordBronc's photo I'm thinking he has the BCB kit. Tho it's not what I want in terms of stock appearance, I like the cross over under the cross member. It won't get hit by the front drive shaft. My only concern is, extra heat cooking the transfer case mounting insulators. That may be why Ford routed the original cross over further forward. We don't want hot exhaust pipes anywhere but they're a necessary evil.

Good point I have the BC kit (pic above) and now my transfer case has a leak.. hmmm Now I need to rethink this and look deeper.

Good luck

Actually, that's Ford's diagram, from the '72 parts manual. I just reorganized it and compiled several years to fit the most information into the smallest space.

And it crosses under the bellhousing.

In trying to remember the original system, it seemed the cross over was in front of the C4 oil pan and just behind the bell housing. Ford used the same system for the 3 speed RAT and RAN manuals. So I was trying to use a common reference part like the transfer case or cross member. Both are in nearly the same place regardless of the transmission. Common maintenance like starter motor removals can be a PITA if I get it wrong. Of course heat from the exhaust also has to be kept from the fuel line and rubber parts. In the 11 yrs. of V8 EB production most of these problems had to be dealt with so the stock design is likely better than most any. I do like the final '77 tail pipe routing however for keeping exhaust fumes out of the interior. But the rest was pretty good for all years. Some of the muffler shops I talked to were arrogantly saying, just trust them and don't ask what they planned to do. Been there, done that, and regretted it later. That's why I was looking at the CJ Pony system. It's just that 400 bucks is a lot to pay for the part between the manifolds and the muffler.

As far as I know, my system was made on a jig running the stock route but using 2 1/4" pipe and a flowmaster muffler. I just installed it a couple weeks ago.

Thanks to Skinnyr1 for the photos. They're perfectly descriptive of the routing I need. I have ask who has the jig. Midas Muffler once told me they had an EB computer program to recreate the original routing. Recently they denied having any specs or blueprint to build an original system.

I had one do mine years ago and it was great except the part where the pipe was laying against the plastic fuel line and melted it. Could have gotten real ugly in a hurry!

I think the 2 to 1 BC Bronco Kit fit very nicely. Only recommendation I’d make is DO NOT use the small 45 degree piece as your exit point. That 45 degree pipe interferes with hanging the entire system. It is smack dab right where the hangers go.

Also mark your pipes going into the muffler and singe pipe going out of the muffler at 2” with a permanent marker because when you are twisting and making adjustments for clearance, these pipe can slide all the way inside the muffler and you can lose track of where you want to be.
