Is there anyone making or repairing the lift-gate striker plates? Mine have a deep notches from many years of the latch wearing the hole. A welding bead to fill it is all I can see as a repair.

Thanks but I need the LIFT GATE strike plates. The tail gate strikes are far more substantial so mine are still in good shape and new ones are available. No one is making new lift gate strikes or latches tho all hard tops need them.

Yes, the stainless steel backing plate at Tom's fits beneath the strike plate and the corner post of the top. The stainless backing isn't in contact with the bolt, so most all of these are like new. The plain steel strike plate both wears and rusts. They are simple stampings that nobody makes now.

Savage has it right. Lift gate and tail gate aren't different names for the same part. They're different parts. A more correct description is that they are bolted to the top's corner post and the bolts in the LIFT GATE latch extend through the hole in them when the locking handle is turned. The extreme wear on mine came from the fact that I have a '68 tail gate and a '77 top. The late top uses the anti theft post in the tail gate to center and hold the lift gate. This stops side to side movement. The early tail gate has 2 anti theft posts that don't touch the lift gate. The lift gate on '66-'68s have 4 side bumpers to stop lateral movement. I will install the '77 anti theft post on the '68 tail gate to effect a long term fix. New or at least good condition strike plates will then be installed too. These are small hurdles in my goal of building a legally licensed and titled '68 with all the desirable look and features of the '77.

Here are the pics. Not great, but might hold you over until you find a better set.
