Need super duty tow rig thoughts.

I came across this today when I was working. This guy I know has a 2007 Ford Super duty crew cab with 120,000 miles on it. The bad news is it needs a new engine. The owner says it has 3 dead cylinders. I could buy it for about $4500 as it sits. Not being a diesel expert, it sounds like it could be a deal to me. The truck is otherwise clean. If it needs a complete engine,my guess was that it would set me back another $4500 (total guess). So the question is, Could this be a deal or am I way off base on what this could cost vs what it's value is?

Not sure what a complete engine would cost but that sure sounds like a deal to me. It may just need injectors, you should have a diesel mechanic check it out.

I would stay away from the 6.0's. If your wanting to spend 9K on a Super Duty, look for an 03' or earlier with the 7.3. There's lot's of nice older trucks for sale in that price range.
That's just my opinion, I don't mind the older proven stuff. The only reason for the 6.0, was to meet new emission standards. The older trucks with the 7.3's seem to hold their value very well, because of all the know problems with the 6.0's.

The 6.0 trucks did have some issues but they are all fixable and at that price it still sounds like a good deal to me. I love my 05 6.0.;)

Second that. I have an 05 6.0. Awesome pickup. Terrible motor. Even more pathetic service from Ford. That said, I have since been far deeper into this engine than I ever wanted to learn, and after replacing, upgrading, disabling known weak points, it seems to run satisfactorily.

I never miss an opportunity to bash the 6.0 or Ford. They will never get a dime from me again.

I know that the 6.0 has issues and not the best reputation but the $ seemed to add up to a good deal. The wild card is that I don't know a hell of a lot about Diesels. When I get home ill do some more research on it but thought I would ask for some opinions first.

I've been looking for a good tow rig for some time now and did a fair bit of research on the 6.0's. The main thing that I found out is if you don't chip the shit out of them they are a fairly descent engine. When you chip, exhaust, intake and whatever else a person can do to them you start to run into the EGR and head gasket issues (along with others). If a person found one that an older couple used to pull their camper down the road I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up. If you found one that a guy jacked with the motor a bunch you couldn't give me the truck. Just my .02.

Not a diesel but very happy with the towing capabilities of my little ole 3.5. Hook up the Bronco and don't even know it's back there.

A 6.0 longblock will run you an honest $13-15k + plus installation + fixing whatever was wrong with it in the first place.... AND then you still have a 6.NO! There's a very simple reason its for sale so cheap!

I would stay away from it... A deal that seems to good... IS!

Without it running, how do you know if anything else is any good... AC, power steering, brakes, alternator, charging circuit, glow plugs, starter... Simple things could rack up a lot of dough quickly...

my buddy bought a used 08 Super Duty w/extended warranty and it had 65,000 miles on the odo. about 2,000 miles later the engine shelled due to some kinda oil pump issue. the engine was replaced by a Ford dealer and he charged the warranty company $10,000. and as tight as the warranty companies are you could bet it was done fairly close to dealer cost. to replace the engine the cab has to come off. no thanks.

That's the 6.4L motor with twin turbo's. It's entirely different, but not without problems. Still hard to beat the tried and true 7.3L. I bought new Powerstroke diesel in 95' (first year), I wish I still had that truck.

i sold my 02 deisel excursion for 4500 and it wouldnt start unless you plugged it in even when it was 80 outside. It had 250k on it. Not sure what the guy did but i was glad to get rid of that deisel piecee of shit!

Did it happen to have a K&N filter in it? I think thats what dusted my cylinders, but i cant be sure.

I have more questions than answers.
Have a 95 with the 7.3 and use it to tow horse trailers. I have run down the road with a number of 6.0 and other trucks. everyone that had a 6.0 sold it and went with a different brand. the power and reliablity is less than anyone else. Those that have used them as grocery getters seem ok with them.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to get some more info on this before I go any deeper into it. My cousin works at a Ford dealer in the service dept. so I'm going to get some advice from him as to exactly what it is likely to need. I have been looking for a while and this just came up so I figure it can't hurt to look into it. It may be a little more project than what I'm looking for but if I could do it on the cheap I would have to consider it. I should be able to get more info on the truck tomorrow.

you can get upgraded rebuilt long blocks for 4-6k and complete rebuilt upgraded motors for 8-10k. I'd do it myself sounds like a good deal. swaping a motor is swaping a motor. Ive helped do it before was a weekend project. even with pulling the cab off. as for power there is world of difference between the 6.0 and the old 7.3.

Buy it and put a 12v cummins in it.

I second this - you can get 6BT's for under 2K and they cost nothing to build up. You should be able to make nearly 1000TQ without too much effort - no joke either..
