I was thinking of painting my top a flat black is that too much of a jeep thing or would it not break any unwritten Bronco traits. Let me know what you think. Also what are you guys spraying in ur fenders for noise control and rock chips. I was thinking of a spray on rubberized undercoating but I am worried it may not adhere to the POR 15 I already have on.

No problems with flat black - many here have done it and it looks good in my opinion.

As for the POR - you might have to scuff it up a bit to allow the undercoating to grab.

Flat paint is fine, but it holds dirt. I have used Semi-gloss Krylon with good results. It too holds dust.
As for coating the inside of your fenders, clean them, and then use 3M Undercoating. It will adhere really well, much better than the spray in liner stuff in a can. I have found the spray in liner stuff can be pealed away. The 3M Undecoating grabs onto everything.

Also where are you located if in the hotter regions of the country that black top is going to draw heat big time.

Tough to apply and even tougher to keep clean. Personally, I would split the difference and go with satin and use a satin clear coat. It will contrast with the body and will have a much more uniform appearance.

I m in Nebraska thanks for the heads up with the heat and the top I never thought of that. I guess I will just have to take the top off in the summer. 3M is the only undercoating I use.

I am no painter but I thought I could use a black paint then go over it with a flat clear coat. Does that not work

Rudy,

Here in NE the black would be welcome in the winter but yup summer would be nasty. You could always install some good insulation and headliner and that would help with both seasons though it would make the top a bit heavier.

IMO Satin is the way to go. The flats show every finger print and do not clean or wear well. If you are set on flat, I would clear coat it will help those issues. Your local automotive paint supply house can direct you on what will give you the look your going for and give you some insight on how it holds up.

Almost every clear coat on the market has a flattening agent that you can mix in at different percents to give you a different sheen. The flatter that you want it, the more you put in while mixing your clear. It is just as UV protected as high gloss clear coats just with the flat look so you wouldnt have to worry about peeling or anything if applied right. The Main problem with flat clears is where you are spraying at. Any dirt/drips/runs that you have in it are going to have to stay there because the old , "cut and buff" trick to remove dirt and what not polishes up that flat look so it doesnt work. I love the flat look, but I also have a 65K dollar booth to paint in at my shop so I can get that super clean job to come out of it.
