NP435 front input shaft bearing replacement

Had some pretty severe rattling coming from my transmission, so I pulled it and removed the front bearing retainer. Bearing was a mess. Tried to use a bearing separator to get it off, but no luck. Do you have to cut it off? Also, do I need to worry about bearing preload? Nothing else was removed. Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly, and I may not, the most important thing you need to remember about removing a manual transmission like this, are the roller bearings that are loose in between the main input and main output shafts.
Is your transfer case still attached?
Generally speaking, it’s pulling too far on the Output Shaft that dislodges the bearings. But I can imagine the same thing could happen if you pull the input shaft too far.
Regarding removing it, I have never had to resort to cutting one. Every time I’ve done a Ford three speed, or helped with a 435, the front input bearing was just a mild press fit.
Hopefully your inner race hasn’t welded itself to the shaft.
But if a regular puller won’t work, you may have to resort to cutting. Just don’t cut into the shaft!
Just so deep, then do the rest with a cold chisel I would think.
I’m sure others have way more experience with the 435 than I do.

Thanks brother. The transfer case is off. I was able to capture the roller bearings. I guess I’ll just cut it off. Not looking to rebuild the whole transmission, so hopefully I can get a new bearing on it and get it back together. Thanks again

You did get the honkin’ big retaining ring off first. Correct?
Or am I thinking of the other end? I know the front has the big snout/retainer for the bearing, but I thought there might be a snap ring on the front of it as well.

I didn’t notice one, but now you have me second guessing. Oops. I’ll check tomorrow. I know there’s a large and small one on the other end.

I have a pretty decent shop at the house. That’s a good idea if I don’t have a tool I need though. Thanks

Chief,
-are you in NorCal area?
-I have a specialized puller that may work, it was made by Sir tools and has like an Eagle claw that grabs the bearing from the middle and pulls it right off the shaft.
-Here is a pic you can appreciate. Second group to make E-9, just missed the "Founding Father's" group.

I remember having the same problem getting that bearing off. I solved my issue by buying a new input shaft. WT291-16J is the part number, I believe, and it was only about $60 when I rebuilt my NP435 a few years ago.

It looks like there’s a spacer between the bearing and gear. Does that sound right?

I have more questions than answers.

Been awhile since I've had one apart. I don't recall any shims on the front either behind the bearing or the race. The break down picture agrees as long as you have a tapered roller not a ball bearing design.

If you have a good press and plates you should be able to press it off. If not, you can remove the outer race and bearings then cut most of the way through the inner race with a grinder. Do 2 places almost across from each other. Make sure you have a solid support and hit the cut spots with a cold chisel. If you are thin enough it should crack and come off.

Chief, Is the bearing a tapered or Roller? My tool works on the roller bearings.
Very similar to this tool.

Well, I tried to cut the collar off and ended up knicking the gear behind it. It’s a tapered roller bearing and is flat against the gear. No way to get a splitter or puller between them. I just ordered a new shaft from Tom’s. All good. I’ve used the cut off trick on rear wheel bearing for years, but it was hard to hold the shaft and strike the bearing. Oh well, it’s just money, right? Thanks though
