purchased this pan from summit:

http://store.summitracing.com/defau...eywordSearch&DDS=1&N=115&target=egnsearch.asp

part numer FMS-M-6675-A58

This is a 351W off of a 1974 LTD. I took the original pan off and tried to put this on, and I have a 3/8 inch gap between the pan and the block on the passenger side. It seems as though the pan is hitting the oil pump. I have a stock oil pump. I even went down to NAPA to look at a stock one and it was identical. This makes no sense???

Why is this not working?? I have read many times that this pan should fit just fine.

Some oil pumps have a bigger casting like a hv pump. I just ground off the excess casting off the pump and bolted the pan on. Is the pan for the older model 351 block like you have? I know the newer ones take a different gasket and a 1 piece is available for it.

Some massaging of the pan is needed.

Put some white grease on where you think is hitting and put the pan on. Remove pan and dimple the area for clearance.

I had to do it to one of mines.

I had to do a cut and weld job on my pan to fit my oil pump - the easier option would have been to get an oil pump for a van application, they are not as deep as others.

what year van oil pump would work?

as far as dimpling the pan, does than meant taking a hammer and gently tapping it out?

thanks for the ideas.

;D ;D ;D Van pump is what I use on my 351W milling HV typ they dont have bolts to hold the bottom on they use machine screws and no hit. A van from they 80's with the W motor good luck. :p :p :p Bill  %) :p

so, you are using a HV pump with this pan from summit?

I acutally just wanted to use a stock pump. would a stock pump from a van in the 80's work also?

Yes,
A ballpeen hammer and a sand bag or similiar behind it will work great.

I have used the lawn as the sandbag.
Some of the ones I have done (rear sump with sindage tray) were so bad I used a torch to get the pan nice and cherry. For that little clearance you need, no need for heat.

Once it clears without an oil pan gasket, it will be just fine with one.
