I have a Warn 5687 or also known as a Belleview. It came with the Bronco and I am trying to figure out how to get this thing up and running. It did not come with any cable controls to the dash and so I would love some help figuring this out.

Here is a link to what the controls looked like: http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/oldwarn.php

This is a detailed link to the schematics and tech info:
http://www.ih8mud.com/tech/warn5687.php

I have done a lot of research to see what people have done to either modify or try to improve on some of the functions of this 40 year old beast. What I can best deduce is that I using continuous heavy duty solenoids attached to a power toggle switch on the dash would be the best way to turn the power on/off. I have also read that you can get heavy duty tractor cable with a T handle from a NAPA to run for the Brake. I am guessing you can also run the same cable and T handle for the Power In? Anyone have a better idea to run the power IN?

I also saw this write up on someone who wired up an air braking system to create an automatic brake: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/newbie-g ... brake.html

Another really good link to a rebuild of one: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/general- ... erid=57133

So this is the first winch I have ever had and I am electrically challenged. I would really like some help getting this back to functioning and the more I read on it, I actually really like that it is an "era correct" winch. Considering I am going to have to create my own controls, i would really love it if someone could weigh in!

Thanks!

I worked for a Utility Company back in the 70's...There were several of these old Warn's mounted on the older Power Wagons along with the Smaller Overhead line trucks.....These were stout..at the least.

That's what I've heard. I've also heard they're fast.

I dropped my 8274 off at Warn and they went above and beyond on it. It came back looking brand new for $400. The did the motor, and solenoids, all the wiring, updated to the new controller. The only thing not replaced or serviced was the cable. Came back painted, they even called to see if I wanted the Jeep tag removed and replaced with a Warn one.

I too have a jeep tag. I've had jeepers want to trade me winches.
Years ago I called warn and they mailed me diagrams and a operation manual for my 8274. Zero cost. They really stand by their products.

You dont have to have the cable contols for the dash to run it. They just make it so you can run from inside the vehicle instead of outside. Basically you need a brake and a clutch cable. Electric takes care of the power in. There is no power out. Although you could repalce the motor with one that can do both. A solenoind and a momentary switch would be a good idea. You could probably do both a dash and a remote power cable.

A local Bronco member actually has the original dash controls that he is willing to part with. I may give the WARN local authorized service center a call but I've read that they no longer support this model. It sounds like I will be able to get it somewhat figured out. The Warn dealer in CO Springs may be able to somewhat customize/upgrade me for a reasonable price.

I'll let everyone know with some pics which route I go. Thanks for the replies.

6V or 12V?
Check out PTO controls from utility trucks or from a supplier on line.
for the brake.

Quality is important because it is your brake lock. The guy who wrote the article you referenced said the only drawback was no pwr feed out...wrong!!! Biggest safety concern and drawback is no worm gear allowing the motor to freewheel -- which this model WILL do if the brake or brake control slip.

I've used this model many times as my Dad bought one in 1970 for his '69 Bronco.

Use a continuous duty rated solenoid for pwr source as the cable on/off switch is inconvenient at best...

So as I suspected, WARN does not support this model any longer. Spoke with the authorized service center in CO Springs and he sounded like he wouldn't suggest bringing it to them because it would be pretty spendy.

My plan at this point is to try to get my hands on the orginal controls/cables and then replace the Power Control with a toggle switch connected to a continuous solenoid (maybe two in succession for a safety measure.) Hopefully this plan works... I am hoping that the dual solenoids will prevent getting into a hairy situation with the winch not having a freespool.

Also, what is PTO controls?

PTO = power take off control. basically just a HD control cable.
Id just carry a spare soleniod. Its my understanding that the winch shouldnt free spool unless the brake is disengauged. So as long as the brake works your fine. I dont think that 2 solenoids would help any.

I am not worried so much as it free spooling due to the brake. What I have heard can happen is the solenoid welds itself ON and since their is not a free-spool feature in the worm drive, it will just keep pullin IN even if you are trying to turn it off until you somehow rapidly disconnect it from the battery. I have heard of people jacking their rigs up because they can't disengage the pull IN feature.

Really? What solenoid "welds itself on"?

Buy whatever Warn uses for a solenoid that will take 300amps continuous duty and of course mount it in-line with the power cable. This will not only be your "on/off" solenoid but also be your safety solenoid in case the internal one "welds itself on".

If solenoids weld themselves on, then we'd have a lot of winching accidents... go with an excellent quality solenoid and not worry.

In trying to research this old a$$ winch, I found a few people who shared they had this happen before with a cheaper solenoid. Thanks for the info-- I will make sure I get a heavy duty solenoid.

I have that exact winch with the orig. set-up. I'll get some pics for you. it's off the bronco right now for a facelift.
I like the on/off cable switch that is mounted under the hood and to the controls you posted. I've used it more that way helping others than pulling myself out/in/thru

I know this is an old thread, but I've just acquired an old Warn Bellview 5687 and was hoping to see a rebuild..

Same here. I've got one that still has the original controls on the dash and would like to get it refurb' dif possible and looking new.

I have three 5687's and one 8274 sitting on the shelf waiting for re-build. They really aren't that hard you just have to know how to take them apart. Cleaning and making presentable is the harder part. I've been media blasting the 8274's and powder coating them. The 5687''s look better natural so blasting isn't really the best for them. I haven't done the 5687's yet so I don't have any pictures of them torn down.

This winter I was planning on putting together some reproduction control panels / cables since those are about non-existent. If you're looking to get it re-built PM me. I've got a bunch of information on them but the attached manual is really helpful if you want to do it yourself.

Wow -- those look great! That's exactly what I want to do with mine, but not really sure where to begin. I don't want to tear it apart and not be able to get it back together again. I don't see a manual attached? Here's a few pics of what I'm starting with. Doesn't look too bad, but I'm just not sure how they work.
