It's funny how a job with only two choices, so basically a 50/50 chance of getting it right, and it seems like 90% of the time it's wrong!

^^^^ AMEN TO THAT!!!!!! %)

OP, you say you can rev it while engaging the starter but as soon as the starter stops it don't run, right? Even though you've hooked up the coil directly to 12 volts.

You wouldn't be running an electric fuel pump, maybe wired into the ignition switch would you? (Just brainstorming)

This is not a hijack (really) but once I got 12volts to the coil, I realized that my electric fuel pump was wired to run in start only just as you suggested. Wired to a hot in run source and rock-n-roll.

Sounds like you are only getting power to the coil through the bypass at the solenoid...

Hey, welcome to CB.com by the way tinmanxx. Sorry forgot to note that before, and thanks for chiming in with some help.

Where are those pics CobraJet? Inquiring minds would like to see some details around the starter and ignition areas.

Bumpity bump bump

Hate to see this thread die. Any progress CobraJetKid?
Hot-wiring it should have kept it running. I mean some
can get motors sitting on the ground to run. Something
strange is going on.

Dirt's right, we need pics...

Does pertronix have a start and a run circuit in the module? I had this same exact problem with an old ford escort wagon. Fired right up but let the key go and it would shut down. Module went bad.

Unfortunately, no. There is only the one Red wire to power it, and the one Black wire to trigger the coil.
The module can change dwell, but does not sense starting. And with the jumper wire directly to the battery, it's getting roughly 12v all the time. It would sense starting by the lower battery voltage while the starter is engaged, but I don't see how it has any way to do anything about it.

Not so sure about the Ignitor III, but I think the OP said he had an Ignitor II, which is not that smart. At least I don't think it is!

Thanks for the response guys. I love how helpful this board is. Anyhow that ignition had me too frustrated to work on the bronco for a little while and been busy at work. I had checked all the grounds a cleaned up the plate on the distributor too. Not sure what was wrong with that ignition module but I stopped and picked up a new set of points on my way home from work the other day and it worked. Took it out of the garage for the first time since last fall when I parked it for the upgrade season. Thanks again.

By chance is the coil one of those that is "internally resisted"? It could be dropping the voltage after the start mode enough so that pertronix is not getting enough juice. I recall someone saying it needs a full twelve volts. Glad it runs with new points but hope the pertronix problem can be solved.

I used a Pertronix coil which is internally resisted but it's the one they recommend using with the igniter so I'm not sure. Currently working on putting a 347 together and it's going to get a new distributor for sure.
