Traded up on prob the BEST PTO winch/bumper I've ever seen today, arrow straight, looks like it was hardly used. Needs blasted/painted though. Weren't they silver from the factory (or dealer)??? I want to say that, or possibly white

Nice score! For a v8 or 6? I've seen both, but I'm not sure which or maybe both are correct.

I think it's for a V8, it supposedly came off a '74, and 95% of '74's were V8's y'know. I'm gonna clean it up & put it on my '71. It has a PTO but the bumper has been "added" to & im really not crazy about it. Prob weighs 150 lbs or more lol. I'll post some pics soon

If the shafts runs under the grill, it's a v8. If it runs through the grill, (shaft leaves the top of the winch) it's for the 6.

I presume you are talking about the Koenig winch and bumper. They were originally painted silver. Matter of fact, everything that went with it was also the same silver. I have several NOS components of the Koenig system and the silver looks almost like what we once called "Aluminum Paint"...

yep its all silver.... like fordfan said.. looks like aluminium paint... Kirk has just done a restore to his and its great looking... older 6cyl went through grill, some later model went under like the V8 version... 6cyl has 2 long shafts and a box like attachment to the frame, v8 has shorter shaft and a long shaft with mount off of the engine cradle mount
here is a pic...

Thanks guys, I was pretty sure it was silver. In prior experiences, that silver/aluminum paint is hard to paint with! Seemed really thin. May look for something similar in a thicker form.

Bumpers were definitely silver. I think that the through the grill option was for when they had a snow plow and a winch. I think the winch was flipped over upside down for clearance? The 6 cylinder"s and V8's had different lengths of PTO shafts.

I believe the actual color was called "Argent" whiz more of a dull silver or aluminum. If you are concerned with absolute originality, Koenig is still in business and may still have the formula.....

Yes Argent was the correct color for some of the Ford silvers, but the early Koenig products was brighter...more silver than Ford's Argent.

I remember it being more dull than bright but it's been a "while" since I've seen a factory fresh Koenig ( : < ) and you could be correct. Again, if the original shade is important to the new Koenig owner, a quick call to Koenig could clear it up. But I think he'll do what most of us would, paint it what color he likes!

On that subject: I have a 1970 Koenig catalog and while there is NOT a separate features & specs page for the Bronco, as there is for all the other 4x4s of the era, it's in the price list with part number 536B for the six and 536C for the V8. List price is $420 for both (about $2600 bucks today). The bumper looks very much like the one used on the 800 series Scout and the mounting of the Scout 4 cylinder version is similar to the Bronco six, as well as the V8 setups for both being similar... yet more Scout/Bronco connections!

Koenig must really have had a locked in agreement with Ford because the ads I see from Koenig in the '60s always list the Ford part number and tout the "approved by Ford" aspects.

Argent is silver in French, just a clever way to market silver paint.

The pto bumper on my 66 is black but who knows how many lairs are on it. Going to give it a scrape to find the original color.

Could be a " Regional " thing or a regional supplier thing but most of or at least 1/2 of the PTO winch bumpers I've seen were a Brown/copper/rust color. { Pacific Northwest }

Interesting. And they were Koenigs? I have seen some that color on Jeeps but don't remember the context.

Sorry - no i wasn't speaking specifically about Koenigs . I seem to remember the Ford Brochures showing DEALER installed PTOs that were koenig with silver/argent bumpers -- but i don't actually remember seeing any on Broncos . I do however remember several { that i actually pulled cable on } that were the Brown/rust color-- but they might have been Ramsey winches or Koenigs with a different type bumper that weren't installed by the dealer but at one of our local 4x4 shops at the time.

I bought one at Super Celebration this year. It's laying in the shop where I unloaded it in April. Not quite sure what I'm going to put it on yet.
