When I lived in PA the exhaust could not end underneath of a passenger area. In a pickup truck it could dump under the bed but if it had a cap on it, it had to exit to the rear or the sides. My Bronco exhaust had to exit the sides or rear of the truck and could not end under the tub. That is as far as 2007 laws.

Far as I know behind the rear tire.
I had duals out the side in front of the tires and had to rework it.

No it cannot exit under neath the vehicle. It must either exit behind the rear tires or out the back. Most people exit theirs behind the rear tires. Some people have had issues with fumes being pulled back in the cab when the exhaust is run straight out the back.

You really dont want the exhaust to exit below the tub and get captured by the bronco's square body allowing the toxins to enter the cab. It's the ones you don't smell that will get you. I already have fewer brain cells from drinkin...

The more important item to worry about is bumper height. I think current law is 24" front and 26" rear. If you have aftermarket or fabricated bumpers then the measurement is taken at the lowest part of the original frame at the front or rear.

Weren't they a little funny about modified suspensions there too. We're eventually moving back there. When I looked into some info for the broncos I thought you had to be pretty close to stock with stock tires. We're still planning on moving there. It just got held off a few years. I just reached my retirement hours last month but now I'm afraid to a leave a good paying job with this economy.

From my experience there are lots of inspection stations which interpret the rules differently or don't understand the rules or just simply don't care. Most small garage inspections stations will pass a vehicle as long as it is within reason. However if you were to follow the rules, then pretty much anything other than stock is illegal.

Don't screw over your inspector if you get caught, always say I just installed that recently, not my inspector said it was OK.

Absolutely, there are not too many of those garages left in the area. The last thing you want to do is get any of them in trouble. I have to say though I only had one cop give me a had time about my truck being illegal. Most times I get pulled over (which is more often then I would like), they usually compliment me on my truck.

I have had my inspection license for a long time. And I can tell you it changes every year all the time. The state sends out updates every so often and they make such sutle changes sometimes guys don't even bother reading them. The laws are up to interptation of the inspection mechanic (and to the police officers too). So you may get away with something at one station you wouldn't at another. There are things we can't fail a car for that if you drove onto the road after an inspection that a policeman car pull you over for and ticket you. Tinted windows are a big thing.

No, you exhaust can NOT exit under the passenger compartment of the vehicle. From what I intrepret from the law it also can not exit in front of any door opening on the side, meaning it has to be behind the door. An EB doesn't have much room behind the door and in front of the tire so I think you're out of luck on that one too. You shouldn't have a problem with pipes out the sides behind the tires or straight out the back.

As for the bumper, I still think it has to be any part of the bumper is within 30" of the ground on a light truck (Bronco), so thats not much of a worry unless you've got a really big lift or tires.

People always have a huge complaint about it, but it is an ANNUAL STATE SAFTEY INSPECTION. As long as your truck is safe and in poper mechanical working order you should be ok. You can't get mad at you local mechanic because the laws he has to inforce are passed by your elected politicans, not made up by them. It is their paycheck that will get hit if they pass something that is not legal, so anymore a lot of the mechanics I know are getting a little stricter because the fines the state imposes on us has risen drastically.

That's right but the GVWR of the Bronco's I've owned have been over 5000 lbs(which puts the limit at 29"). Check your title or owner's card. Like I said it is up to discreation of the inspection mechanic.

How many vehicles have you seen that are above those legal limits? I know of quite a few.

Nice link by the way. I really don't know if the updates they change are in that or not. We get updates all the time and some actually revoke prior updates. I would say as long as you mechinic says he'll sticker it you should be ok.

And my prior post was not meant be any legal advise, just what I would say if I was inspecting it.

Even though it is tilted as a station wagon, it fails under different guidelines due to it being classified as a SUV. Same as Blazers, Jeeps, etc
