Swapping in Explorer but keeping it carb. QUESTION:
Can I splice into the "green wire" (field) going into my old external regulator and power both my HEI distributor AND electric fuel pump?

No. That is your alternator exciter wire. Use that green wire for the 3G alternator that comes with the Explorer motor if present.

Use the current Coil + wire for the HEI.

You will need another switched power wire for the Fuel Pump.

Better yet, use the coil + wire to drive two relays, one for the HEI and another for the pump. You don't want either of those loads running thru the IGN switch. Put in some sort of safety switch in the fuel pump circuit. Either an oil pressure kill switch or a inertia switch, or both if you want to.
