What is a average price for a shop to do a gear swap? I am about ready to get my gears installed. I already have the gears and install kit. I just need them installed. Has anyone used 4WheelParts or would you recommend another place.

You will find that prices vary greatly, when I was shopping around I was quoted $200-1000 just for labor! I would ask around and see who is the recommended in your area. If your mechanically inclined and 'think' you can do it yourself, then it's much cheaper to buy or borrow the tools and do it yourself. I did my own and while it took some head scratching, it wasn't overly difficult, just time consuming.

Not that much trouble to do them yourself. I bought a dvd from badshoeproductions.com a guy named ken collins. He is the man! If you nothing about mechanics he walks you step by step on all his dvds. Save your money do it yourself!

If you're mechanically inclined you can do it yourself

You'll need some special tools for the job

Magnetic dial indicater (using a harbor freight set about 20 dollars)

veneer caliper or micrometer(had mine for years but I think they can be had for around 30-40 dollars)

Press (had this for a few years to press axle bearings off, bought it from northern tool for around 200 dollars)

pinion depth gauge (got this from summit racing IIRC around 100 dollars)

Torgue wrench that reads in inch pounds (got mine from napa years ago, IIRC around 50 dollars back then)

you price is also going to vary on depending if you are just dropping the truck off and picking it up done vs you bringing in the bare assemblies for them to update.

parts are parts and you can do the basic math on what you'll have there. it's going to be the total labor and all the incidentals that will factor into the final number.

I'm in the middle of doing this right now. I'm doing it myself (with the help of another member here) and it's not very difficult. I'm replacing everything (gears, pinion yoke, axles, etc). Only took a few hours to take completely apart, then I painted everything, and used the other guy's bearing press and gauges.

You can do it yourself, just do it!!!!

I paid a guy 200.00 dollars to completely assemble mine, no special tools needed ;D Considering I had about 1000.00 dollars worth of parts I really did not want to learn on them. If I was building an offroad rig i would have done them myself. The guy that built mine explained everything to me, he is known for cutting down nine inch fords and making them narrower. He is 78 years old so I figured his years of experience were worth the dollars. A shop will charge much more.

I went through this about 2 months ago as well. I got quotes ranging from 180 (4wheelparts) to 1500!!!. I bought the tools and did it myself. It was pretty easy. Just take it slow and ask all the questions you need to. We are all here to help.

I carried my third member to my differential guy and he swapped out the rear gears for $60.

I drove the Bronco to him for him to swap out the front gears and he charged me around $600 for that.
