Gear Swap Price? & Questions

I called a shop the specializes in differential service.

They quoted me 450.00 to do a gear swap for both axles if I supply the gears.

They quoted me 1100.00%) for both axles if they supply the gears.

This "seems" fair to me.

What do you think? ;D

I do not have the time or expertise to pull this off.

Do you have advice for a place that I can get the best price from if I were to purchase gears on my own?

Thanks!
Matt

i just did all mine myself and the gears ran 210$(yukon)per axle and the (yukon)gear install kit was around 90$...per axle....so there only hittin you bout 510 or so for labor...and if you dont have the means to do it yourself then it is worth it....just remember if you ever want lockers or anything in the future your going to have to pay the same price you are now and the added cost of the lockers.....i hate to say it but it pays off in the end if you can do the gears and lockers at the same time to hold down cost....if you go the way your wanting to just plan on paying twice for the gear install

Thanks & yes the plan was to change the front to a Power Lock..I like what I have in the rear end it seems to lock up just fine when needed! I am not sure what is in the rear but the thing hooks up fine for me!;D

That's a pretty good price also remember there is about 100 bucks for the install kit with shims and bearings.

Around here they usually charge $300 for a D44. I have never priced out the 9", it is a lot easier so it very well could be $150 cheaper making the $450 price.

i know JBG is having a sell on 9" drop ins with gear of choice and a yukon locker for 925$ set up with new bearings and all the bizz...all you have to do is drop it in the housing and the gears and locker are already set up....i just bought one from them a couple of weeks ago for another bronco im doing and it took a few hrs to install....u can do it even if you have little exp. if you take your time.....the front takes a little more doing and it is alot easier if the axle is out of the bronc....but it can be done with it still in as well.....the power lock is a good option if your not going to be doing any hard core wheeling...

Try Hicks 4X4 in Pomona if there still around.
Or Tri County Gear in Pomona.
If you go to Long Beach Performance Swapmeet or Pomona Swapmeet there are also a couple of regulars there that do gear swaps.
I have no direct involvement with these people but people in my club have used some of these vendors. I swapped my own gears when I had access to a full machine shop many moons ago.
