If it is aluminum and in good shape without any deep scratches or gouges you could sand it with 320 and follow that with a red scotchbrite pad. Then wash it with prep solvent and dry it, spray the etching and let that flash. Then just spray 2K sealer and let that flash off. Then apply the base/clear. Doing it that way is faster and easier because there is only one sanding step and you will get the same end result.
Whatever etch, sealer, or paint you use check the TDS sheet. The TDS (technical data sheet) will tell you the substrates, mix ratios, dry times, everything you need to know about the product. To find the TDS just type a search in Google like "Spies 5400 TDS" and that will get you Spies 5400 primer/sealer TDS.
