Trying to decide on a radio for my stocker '66. I can't decide between a modern 1-DIN radio and something vintage. I have this on the way but might put it in my daily driver pickup truck which is having radio problems:

or something more vintage like this 70s-80s Ford radio:

The Bronco had the stock AM radio so it just has those holes in the dash. I'm not against cutting it and a Tuffy console is not an option. The vintage radio would look nice and fit in with an original '66 dash but it's hard to beat modern functionality like an SD card reader. I just got a dual voice coil speaker to go in the stock speaker grill in the dash so I will have stereo sound. If I go with a vintage ratio, I will probably install an FM modulator like this so I can hook up an iPod.

Here's the Bronco it's going in.

Thoughts, opinions?

I understand it is your Bronco but I would be hard pressed to cut the dash on that Bronco if the rest of it looks as good as that pic. Maybe consider placing an aftermarket in the glovebox and install the original in the dash. If you cut it you may regret it later.

They make new radios that have the vintage look/feel with the knobs, etc. But also have aux inputs for an mp3 player. Sounds like that would be right up your alley.

There are less expensive alternatives but this is a good example of what I'm talkin bout.

With that clean of a rig, I would stay w/ the factory am radio and go Tuffy or a remote unit that allows for a discrete remote or Ipod hook-up.

I put a plastic aftermarket box under Campico's dash so we can have ipod/etc hookup. Deck cost me 99 and plastic box was 20.00 Nice, out of the way, and you dont have to cut up my old '66!! If you do, tho, I have some nice Flares I'll give you too. :)

Thats exactly the kind of thing I'd want for mine. You have any other examples you've found?

Haha. I'll never cut the 1/4s so keep your flares. And can you really call it your old '66?
I don't have the original AM radio anymore. I actually gave it to Andrew (BajaBronco). So I just have the 5 holes in the dash. Believe it or not, I actually listen to the radio and AM won't do it for me. I can't find any vintage radios from the '60s that have FM. They're all AM. Aftermarket in the glove box would suck just trying to reach for it. Any radio other than the stock AM will result in having to cut the dash, even the units from RetroSound and LMC. Besides, if I cut the dash, I can keep the piece I remove and always weld it back in if necessary. Aftermarket box is an idea but I don't think it will look as clean as in-the-dash. Plus what about the 5 holes already there?

Look man do what you want, but I am putting mine back as close to stock as possible.. I'm sending my A.M. Radio off to get the guts replaced with A.M. / F.M. guts.. Looks the same as factory but will have new input jacks and F.M. ....

Man that thing is nice. I would definitely stay original. Either a remote unit with the original AM in the dash or one of the RetroSound units. I think that modern unit would look terrible in a stock dash. Also, I don't think the later style factory radio will fit without modification.

I kept my original radio in my '66 but I wired up a little amp with RCA inputs that my iPod plugs into. All the wires are hidden, dash looks stock, but I can crank to some Metallica. :) I also have a little mp3 player that has an FM tuner so I can get radio too. I can't remember who's idea it was on here, but they just attached the amp underneath the passenger seat to keep everything clean. I copied him and couldn't be happier. Sweet ride man! Good luck.

Here's the direct link to the service they offer.. They replace the internals with modern parts keeping the stock appearance. They also can add aux inputs like iPod and xm and RCA jacks... Pretty cool if you ask me...

I just attached the face plate of the original radio and ran bolts through for the knobs to attach to. For tunes I'm going with the Ipod directly to amp route. New Ipods have recievers for radio use. I'm attaching a suction cup Ipod holder on the dash. It's the super clean way to go.

bump this up just to see if any of you have bought one of these?

It's kind of a poor man's RetroSound. A very poor man's. I'd love to get a RetroSound, but I dont wanna break the bank. There's plenty of stuff I'd rather throw $250 at than a AM/FM receiver.
