In my ongoing quest for an overdrive, Ive discovered these things that Advance Adapters sells. They go between the bellhousing and tranny, so the crossmember has to be moved back like 7.5". I know this is going to raise hell with the tcase shifter and driveshaft angles. It definitely isnt cheaper than buying & rebuilding a ZF, but then again Id get to keep my NP 435 and what isnt cool about 8 forward gears?? Im also not crazy about going to a hydraulic clutch. Theyve been around a while, so Im reserving some hope for finding one on ebay or in a junkyard somewhere. Does anybody on here have one of these or know someone who does? Madgyver posted a pic off of protofab's site that showed the shifter of one in an EB in an earlier thread, so I know its been done. Looking for opinions...........any input is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Somewhere I have a 15 year old magizine article about installing one of those in a bronco. It was a shop called Vintage Broncos out of Arizona. The shop is long gone now, but they are still making those overdrives. Also available in underdrive too.

They're nice units, but for the Bronco folks you don't see them very often because of cost, added driveline length, and the fact that you can get a 5 speed w/overdrive now for much less $$.

The one in the photo is in Keith's truck (he is a co-owner of Protofab). He got the unit many years ago from Dean at Vintage Broncos. They installed several of them when they were in business, as Broncobowsher noted. He likes it a lot.

Cool, thanks guys. Ill try to email Keith about it. I *think* I can make it work without too much trouble. Did some measuring today and since Im only going to have about 2.5" of lift it shouldnt make the driveshafts too wacky.

Don't bother. Their email has been screwed up for months. Reachable only by phone!

Advance Adapter Ranger overdrive

Hi,
Have the overdrive in my daily driver/tow vehicle. 79 f-150 short bed 400 motor.
The overdrive is nice but there is a lot of gear noise over 2000 rpm. So bad that I pulled out the 4.10's and installed 3.50's to drop the R's. "NOISE" Sounds like your dad's 3 speed in his old pu. 2nd gear and 70mph on your way to 85.
The positive side of the overdrive is I can pull my 29' travel trailer and hit a steep grade and every time I shift down, R's increase about 500 RPM. Always in my RPM range.
I also use this thing when running the sand dunes and bowls in 4 wheel drive. Run 2nd high range then slam Od to get a bit more speed with out leaning on the red line.
Note. Have to lengthen the front drive line and shorten the rear. Transmission mount needed to be moved to the rear 7.375" too
