I finally got off my dead arse and started building a rear bumper today. Went and bought 6 feet of 3x6 rectangular tube 3/16 wall, I'm still in shock at the price of that steel.
I cut some 1/4 plate to box the frame end and found 2x6 tube that I cut down for the mount that will slide into the frame end. I was thinking of using a small trailer spindle and hub for the pivot point of the tire carrier...Thoughts?
Sorry the last pic is a little out of focus, it got dark.

ehumaui, that tube you have over the spindle, do the bearings fit inside it or was there some machine work involved to get the races in?

Im glad you could by just 6 feet , I needed some 2x6 3/16 but only could by a full stick 20 feet .

The outer tube came with the kit, just had to grease the bearings.

If I had to do it again, I would do a 2x2 tubing for the tire mount. Mine is a little to flexy.

Update

I made a bit more progress.
Got the pivot assembly finished. Tapered the ends of the 3x6 tube and bought a piece of 1.5x3 for the tire mount/swing. I'm thinking of using a tailgate latch on it for the closing mechanism. Here are a few more pics.
My goal is to have this done for the Az Stampede.

Pivot

I used a 1" grade 8 bolt (Tractor Supply Co) as a pivot point for my tire carrier.

The Protofab cam lock is sweet, btw.

From one of the initial pics, when you reinforced your frame horns...You totally boxed it in. How are you going to get a wrench in their to hold the nuts. I know you could weld the nut in...but it gets hard to lubricate and several years later, it may not want to come lose when you need it to.... I know you can also run a bolt all the way fromt he top through the bottom...although I can find several problems with doing so. Just asking, if your thinking outside the box, I just want to see what the box looks like so I can know where to sort it.

Best

Someone mentioned it earlier in this thread that they found theirs on ebay. I looked a bit and found a company called Jeeptubes.com sells the pivots. Don't know anything about them but they want nearly 50 bucks for it. I built my own.

I bought a 1" trailer spindle and bearing kit, used a piece of 2" pipe I had for the outer tube then a piece of 1.5" pipe on the inside to hold the bearing races in place. I drilled 4 holes in the 2" pipe and plug welded to the inner pipe.

have you thought of useing Protofabs cam lock?

I have not seen Protofabs cam lock. I'll look into that option. Origionaly I wanted to use a car door latch but they're rather large. Second plan was to use a tailgate latch (last pic).

You totally boxed it in. How are you going to get a wrench in their to hold the nuts. I know you could weld the nut in...but it gets hard to lubricate and several years later, it may not want to come lose when you need it to

Hmmm. well, I thought I would run a bolt all the way through top to bottom. Also since I boxed the sides I was going to run a bolt side to side too. The problem with the top to bottom bolt is the frame is fairly thin and there's not much meat between the edge of the hole and the end of the frame. I think I will weld a plate there to reinforce it a bit.

I use nickle based Neverseez on all my bolts. Never have to worry about things rusting up.

Mherriford used a spindle, hub and spare hub lock for his pivot. Now he has a spare set of bearings and a locking hub in case he ever blows one up. That's what I plan on using.

I know a guy who machined a D44 spindle & outter hub to make his tire swinger. It locks open when you lock the hub & if he ever blows a hub, he has a replacement part. The other thing you could use is this.
