Rear gas tank painted or steel?

I'm restoring a 72 and trying for things to look as original as possible. I had to replace the rear tank with one from TBP which is galvanized steel. Does anybody know if the original was painted and if so, what color?
I threw out the old one which leaked like a sieve and can't remember...

Pretty sure mine was painted black

Mine was Black but it was so filthy I don't recall if it was gloss or flat. Leaning towards flat

Well... How original do you want it to be? Do you have the factory rear tank skid plate?
