I could only imagine that with your stock leafs and the single or dual for that matter J.D. shocks your rear end is going to be extremely stiff/hard.
If I were you I’d look into getting a set of Bill Stein I think the number is 5100 series and run singles and see how those feel with your stock leaf springs.
As far as traction bars I think there just a band aid for another issue somewhere in you suspension that should be diagnosed and fixed, not to mention how much they limit travel.
Remember it's just my $.02. Later, Francois.
OK you asked for it ;D

I was told by James Duff folks that every bronco they have seen roll on the trail had a single shock set up . I personally run single ranchos in the rear and I will upgrade to newer ones when they wear out ...but I will still run singles . I have placed my shocks in front of the housing and angled slightly forward and towards eachother at the top . There are pics on my web site if you get bored . :-U

Dual shocks really work especially if you go fast over rugged trails or fly your Bronco. Dual rear shocks (per wheel) also help stabilize the rear if you pull trailers at highway speeds. They came stock on Stroppe prepaired Baja Broncos. I never disagreed with any Stroppe modification.
just my $.02 worth...

I had the James Duff duals on the rear and the ride was reallly rough. I took one off on each corner and it made a noticable difference in ride and didn't affect body roll much. I would just go with one. Wait I did just go with one.

Don

When I bought my truck 23 years ago I double shocked both ends and it worked well back then but in the years since I went to a 3 inch lift and Rancho 9000 and single shocked it but even with the adjustments I didnt really care for them so I tossed them and went to single Duff 70/30 and I just love those shocks the front is a really good ride and always under control and the rear is firm but not choppy as for roll control the 33 BFG's I run are radial so the tires flex so much I dont think the shocks play much part until it would be too late. Ill bet Stropp would do Broncos differently if he was building them now with the newer technologies. As for Bilstiens never tried them so I cant comment. If some one wants to send me a free set I will try them and let you know. Unless your climbing sand dunes I dont see the need for traction bars. It seems like half of the time you got a wheel in the air when 4 wheeling.

I like to put duals up front and leave singles in the back, since all the weight is really in the front. Wouldn't hurt to put 'em in the back, but isn't really necessary.

After Christmas I'm doing the BC route with Wristed Housing, spring rockers, inboard rear shock mount and am debating on buying Bilsteins or RS9012's.

It always seems like people are sayin-I heard they're good, but no one has them.
[/quote]

I've got Bilsteins, one per corner, 3" lift, 33" tires. 6100 series (12" stroke) in the front, 5100's (10" stroke) in the back. They replaced dual Rancho 9000's in front and single Rancho 9000's in the back. The fronts were spendy at $125 each but the rears cost about the same as the Ranchos they replaced- $69 a piece. I only went with the 6100's in front to get the spherical rod ends to avoid binding when the axle is crossed up. I've got a Cross inboard mount in back so that's not a problem.

I did several "before and after" runs on my favorite bumpy farm road. The difference in comfort and control was impressive. I could never find a setting with the Ranchos that could simultaneously soak up the big bumps and yet not pogo all over the place. I'd buy them again in a heartbeat.

Thanks lars-that's exactly what I was wondering. I had a feeling that the Bilsteins are much better than the 9000's. The only thing I'm wondering is how a setup like yours is versus dual 9000's at every corner. My buddy is running the Wildhorses setup like that and his is great in ride quality both on and off road (we've even jumped it all four wheels in the air, and it was like landing on a pillow). One gripe about his sthough, si that it does have a soft ride, but it seems to "roll" when braking fast. Like braking a Buick. Since you had duals up front, your experience seems like it would be a pretty aaccurate comparison.

Another nice thing is single Bilstein's is a lot cheaper than dual 9000's at all 4 corners.
