Guys,

I'm going to replace my gears and go to a 4:56 set and I need some advice on where to buy them and which manufacturers are preferred.

I mainly use my Bronco for street driving, so I'm not looking for anything exotic for extreme off-road use.

Gears are one of those things you can probably find locally at a speed shop or off road shop. Make sure you have the right front carrier. If you currently have 3.50’s, you will need a different carrier in the front. D-44 has one for 3.92 and below (numerically), and one for anything above that.

When i switched from 3.50 to 4.88 gears in the D44 i purchased "Thick" ring and pinion set from TBP, reused the stock carrier.

Most all of the vendors on this site can help you with ring & pinion gears, the proper carrier and installation kits.

Other places: Randy's Ring & Pinion & Summit Racing

If you're going to do gears, that would be the time to get a master install kit, solid bearing spacer, Daytona pinion support, etc. When I purchased my ARB's, I got the best price on the install kits, pinion support, yoke, etc from Quick Performance.

One more thing......

I have a '76 model, so I suppose I could have a 28 spline or 31 spline in the rear. Problem is, I have no idea which. Is there any way to find out without pulling everything apart and physically counting splines on the axle?

No sure way other than counting. Even if the stock tag is there you never know if somebody swapped out the 3rd member at some point.

Every EB came with 28-spline axles, so if you have factory axles, then they're 28-spline. Like SteveL pointed out though, if you can't tell whether they're factory or not, then the only way to be sure would be to pull an axle and put eyes on the splines.

I replaced everything2 yrs ago, was real happy w/ TBP prices and quality of gears. Shipping has increased so much since then that unless one of the vendors is nearby or can drop it off at an event you're attending, it makes sense to use a local shop for sourcing. Yukon, US Gears, Timken bearings, the Kitsap tend to have similar parts. Definitely get the complete kits, and the extra thick gearing TBP had for my 4.56 gears really impressed my shop with over 40 yrs exp. I don't think you can go wrong with any of our vendors, its shipping that'll kill ya.

Hey TigerPete. Looks like u kinda in middle of FL. On heavy parts, find FL brother with room for ride back and several Bronco vendors offering free shipping to SC. Just a thought.
