Remote Trans filter

I would like to setup a remote filter for my transmission, and I thought it would be cool to use the same oil filter as that I use for my engine.

My question is: Can I use an engine oil filter for my transmission, or do I need a special transmission oil filter? Has anyone setup a remote trans filter using a standard oil filter?

And yes I did a search.

Thanks for you help,

Bronx

There are kits that use an engine oil filter in the cooler line. I am using one in my power steering. The temperture and pressure are withen the same range or lower then engine oil. My only worry would be if the additives are compatable with the filter. For that it might be best to contact your filter manufacturer (Fram, K&N, etc.). Don't expect an easy answer.

You might look into a Magnifine filter. Many diesel owners run them, I have one on my PSD.

Doesn't have a paper filter but it catches the metal shavings.

I use a spin on hydraulic oil filter. Don't know if an engine oil filter would be a problem, never tried one.

I'm running a Fram engine oil filter on mine. I mounted my remote filter mount to the original air filter mount that's on the passenger fenderwell and us a PH16. The short filter allows me to unscrew it easily. I change it when I change my engine oil filter usually.

I don't use Fram oil filters for my engine but I tried the NAPA equiv. for the PH16 and it was too tall to fit where I have it mounted. So stuck right now with Fram.

The PO put mine in. It is nothing more than a remote engine oil filter kit that uses a standard Ford oil filter. It does have an additional port in it that a temp sender mounts in that I don't see on the remote kits. Not sure if it was originally there or added though. In the pics below you can see it tucked up into the extra space underneith the passenger seat. (Look through the hole in the panel above my muffler)
