Removing grill trim

Might be a dumb question, but how the heck do I remove the grill trim?
I've tried but the nut just spins and spins. I tried pulling on the trim as I tried to remove the nut but didn't work.

Is there a trick?

And while I'm asking about the trim. Any recommendations on how to clean it and bring it back to its glory? PO seems to have sprayed it black and gray.

Thank you!

Time to get the die grinder out. You will want to put new retainers on anyway. The paint should come off the chrome pretty easy. A little thinner and some elbow grease.

What bronkenn said just did this on mine. Pull the grill off it will be easier in the long run I think, did mine with grill on and it was a major pain in the rear. I ended up repainting my trim because it was in such bad shape. The paint job on my bronco didn't call for new trim.

So cut off the retaining hardware? Is that hardware something that can be easily sourced or does it have to be through a Bronco retailer? I'm in Canada so it's a bit expensive to ship/import things.

The hardware is pretty reasonable to buy. I know that Jeff's Graveyard has them and they are a small package that should ship pretty cheap. You can also make the retainers out of small bolts and grind the heads down to fit in the chrome trim and slide them where they need to be. Probably a couple hour project.
