Replace clutch disc only or go with a complete kit?

Swapping in my new motor this weekend and will be replacing the throwout bearing/pilot at the same time. Question is, can I just swap in a new clutch disc if the pressure plate/flywheel are in good condition or do you have to do a complete clutch kit? Prev. owner said the clutch was fine. Thoughts?

I would replace all and have the flywheel resurfaced, Hate to get it back together and have it chatter.

P/O said it was replaced recently before the motor went out. If it looks good when we get it apart would you just replace the bearings and run it? Don't want to dump more cash on something that may have plenty of life left in it

I'd probably run it if it looks good. However, I would never recomend it. I guess I kind of ask for punishment. I have swaped engines and pulled the trans less than a month later to replace the clutch.

Seems like a lot of work to get to it all and not just replace it all. Just do it all and know that it's good.

i had my flywheel ground for $40 and a new clutch kit at autozone was like $125. Cheep iinsurance to make sure youll be able to burn the tires!

Remember not to paint any of the mating surfaces on block, bell housing, cover plate, trans, etc.

Anytime you replace the clutch disc you "must" replace or resurface the flywheel. A contact pattern is formed between the two. The bearing is kind of a pain to take out if you haven't done it before, but again the bearing develops a pattern and starts of become oblong, so change that out too. I prefer the bronze bushing rather than the bearing style. If you only replace one of the two you will most likely have chatter. Not that it's a ton of work, but why take it apart twice when you can get it all done at one time.

i just put in a autozone duralast NU0020 for $112.99

It was supposed to be a diaphram but came out a 3 finger. I looked all over including napa and just kept that one and used it. Works ausome!

Had flywheel ground for $35

I tried to save money a yeear ago by reusing a old clutch and flywheel. It chattered during takeoff and reverse bad. I drove it like that for almost 2000 miles. The $150 is money well spent. After a year of chatter i can appreciate a nice new clutch!

Yeah, may as well do it right the first time. Would be stupid to put 5k into the powertrain only to skimp on a $125 clutch and kick yourself everytime you drive it.
