Anybody know any tricks to make 40 year old plastic items look new? Grabbed a fan shroud, washer fluid bottle at the salvage yard.

on some plastics rubbing compound will work to restore a shine. Other than that, plasti-dip, paint designed for plastic or dipping in epoxy are your best bets. Personally, I generally get a light carbon fiber cloth, and wrap the part in carbon fiber and epoxy it, it is stronger and looks good.

Heat gun.

I've used it on motorcycle fenders etc back in the day.

Heat it until it is almost ready to melt, then stop.

There may be some more info on the net doing this.

Then I use old English furniture polish to keep it clean and shiny.

You are asking a rhetorical question. You may be able to make it look good for a while but you cannot reverse the deterioration of old plastic.
