Howdy all, I stopped today and got the steel so I can build Scott's bumpers.. Here is a teaser pics of the steel and parts Scott sent this way. Still waiting on the latch from MSC Industrial. I will keep you updated with pics of the build over the next week or two.

The specs are:
Hinge from RockStomper.com ($45)
Clevis Mounts RockStomper.com (Awesome parts for $20)
2000lb capacity latching clamp MSC Industrial ($33+shipp)
2"x4" .120 Wall rectangular 24'
2"x2" .120 Wall square 24'
1-1/2"x1-1/2" .120 Wall square 24'
----$115 from local steel supplier

Here is a pic of mine, which is how the front and rear will look.

That is almost identical to how my rear bumper looks but without light cutouts. The receiver is also flush to the steel.

Guys,
I am really excited about these bumpers. The rear will be identical to the pic with a tire carrier. The front will be a combination of the rear bumper and the pre-runner bars in the other picture. I won't be running a winch full time on the front bumper so I can tuck the bumper closer to the grill. When I save up the money for a winch, I am going to attach it to a hitch receiver which will be able to attach to the front bumper. Of course there will be light tabs on the pre-runner bars and I have intentions of making the bumpers into portable air tanks.

Scott

Here is the bumper I just finished using RajinCajun's idea. I am not sure if I want to bulid a tire carrier or not, it would free up a lot of space but I am afriad a tire that big might look a little goofy.

Sellers69,
Looks good. It is a great, simple, strong design that allows you to get rid of those rusty quarter corners! Good job.

Rajin, you better patent your bumper!

Wow.. I honestly don't have a problem of fellow Bronco owners building bumpers similar to mine...I just built it as I went and made it fit the way I wanted... As long as folks say I built it like RajinCajun's on CB.com....and I will be happy...LOL!!

I got delayed a little bit this weekend, I got an 85 Toyota Ext Cab 4x4 for my daily driver to keep miles off the Excursion... And I need to finish up my front roll cage for my Bronco....

Here are a few pics of the latch from MSC, I like this style because it has a 2000lb capacity, and it has a latch that keeps it closed....and it pulls the tire carrier down and in so it doesn't rattle any...this will be the 5th or 6th one we have used. I will be building the bumpers a little long so when Scott can get his Bronco up here we can trim the fenders and cut the ends to match his body lines etc... Still not 100% sure how the front will be as far as having the ends bend around the corner, but if the body is in the way, we may do it different...that is the great part about building it myself..I can adapt as I go... I can cut it long and leave some extra to trim exactly the way we want...

Oh and Scott, when you are ready to build the mount for your winch to put into the reciever, let me know...I have a few ideas to keep it from bending the reciever tubing if you are pulling at an angle... And for the light tabs, what size lights are you planning to use and do you want tabs for 2 or 4 lights?

Hey Rajin
I'm no metal strength expert but is .120 wall stout enough for something like a clevis mount? I thought 3/16 was the thinest you wanted to run for something like that??? Any who cool design keep ups updated with plenty of pics.

Actually, we have used the thick and the thin stuff.. My bumpers are out of the .120 because that is all I could get ahold of during a holiday, and I have yet to bend them at all, and I have abused the CRAP! out of my bumpers. The clevis mounts are welded on front and rear of the square so It actually adds to strength along with the way I put the reciever tubing through it and weld it on both sides too.. I have just built several bumpers with thicker stuff, but on a Bronco that is already heavy, I wanted to save as much weight as I can and the .120 (1/8) has been trail tested and I feel confident in it. I think the only way you could bend these bumpers is in a crash with another vehicle or hitting a tree at highway speeds...which I have seen the heavy duty monster bumpers bend during that... I honestly don't like the flush weld clevis mounts, I like the security of them being welded on both sides...especially when I am yanking on a Heep..LOL!!

So how do they get welded on then? I'm only familiar with the flush mount style. That how I assumed you were going to weld the ones on this bumper. So do they mount throught the tube like a receiver? I know 1/8" can take a beating and is plenty stout and can take some abuse it was the shackle mounting strength when being yanked on that I was curious about. Share your secret I'm alway willing to learn a new trick ;D

No problem, yes you are right, take a look at the pic in the first part of this thread. The two shackle mounts are long enough to go through the 2x4" square and stick out on the back side about 1/4" so they are welded similiar to the reciever.. My front ones are the weld on D rings, but I was in a hurry and they were only $10.. I do plan to put the through style when I begin finishing up and modifying my front bumper for more grill protection. I had a limb come up and catch the front of my hood and fold up the front 10"..
