Searching for Voltmeter to Fit 1-5/8" Hole in Dash Trim Piece

Hey Everyone,

I'm always amazed at the resourcefulness of some of the folks here...

I need to replace an aftermarket voltmeter that was installed in the dash by the previous owner. I have checked a new 2" voltmeter and it works.

The hole size in the dash trim piece is 1-5/8". In all of the searching that I have done online I can only find one 1-1/2 meter (AutoMeter). Everything else is either 2" 2-1/16" or 2-5/8".

Just wondering if my searches are missing something.

I'm thinking that I can order the 1-1/2" and make it work. I will just look a little odd.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jeff

Is there room for a normal 2-1/16” gauge? It’s easy to make a pilot for a hole saw with a piece of wood or plastic that fits the 1-5/8 hole.

Hey,

There is room. I actually bought a set of three 2" (or maybe 2-1/16) gauges several years ago. Just being lazy not wanting to replace all three, or have this one be a different size than the other two.

Make sure they’re measuring the gauges at the same place you are.
Many (most/all?) gauges aren’t measured at the hole size I don’t think. When you’re looking at gauges, no matter what size it is, check the specifications for “hole size“ just to make sure.
Or is that already what you’re talking about?

Hi Paul,

I'm not having a lot of luck finding that detail when doing Google searches, or O'Reilly or Autozone.

Related question... we drove the Bronco about 75 miles today. Sometimes I would look over and the meter would be working. Shut off the motor for a while, start it back up and nothing for a while. Not sure I understand why it is intermittent.

Bad gauge, bad wire, or a bad connection.
It’s usually a connection, but gauges and wires can go bad too.
