OK . . . so what I want to know is who is Huttwo?? ;D

Sounds like there are plans to do some serious work if you're pulling the engine. Should be fun to watch the progress.

We won our game. 9-0, 2 more games left in the regular season.

Got started on unhooking everything to pull the motor. Took off hood, took out the radiator and transmission cooler.

We plan on pulling the motor to basically refresh and reseal it. It has sat for a while and everything leaks. We also want to do it so I can learn some basics.

Plans are to:

Install shorty headers
Water pump
Oil pan gasket
rear main seal
thermostat housing gasket
add some bling such as Bronco valve covers
new hoses

SO....................................................what's the project going to be? It looks awesome as is!!

Thats what I was thinking! That thing looks tits!

Hutthree,

Tell that old man to give you that thing as a graduation gift. That would be a graduation gift you would have to keep for life. I have had mine since I was 13 and have worked on it with my uncles, grandfather, dad, stepdad, drove it to school, etc.... I will never let her go. I hope you and your dad keep yours too. Good luck Biggin'!

Well, this has been a slow project, but we have to kick into high gear. My football team is 14-0 and we have 2 more games to make it perfect and be state champs. So it has been school, football practice, homework, and then trying to work on the Bronco a couple nights of the week.

We have pulled the motor and are about done stripping it down. It appears that it may have been rebuilt at some point in the past. We are not sure that we are going to do any block work. We are going to replace a lot of the nuts, bolts, gasket, and seals. My Dad has bought a bunch of parts. He is most excited about the shorty headers. One of the things that has bugged him for a long time is exhaust leaks. We are looking forward to get all the cleaning done and start putting it back together.

Below are some pictures we have taken along the way.

Hang in there & good luck w/the playoffs.. I take Pics at our local HS, was ranked 2nd in the state. They shoulda been playing for State, but didn't get it done in their Quarter Finals game.. A flat 1st half, down 12-0, came back strong 2nd half, went up, 23-19, lost in last couple minutes, 26-23... Felt bad for them.

Look forward to more progress w/the Bronco.

Wow Bud. The photos of you working on your old Bronc reminds me so much of myself and my Dad working on my '73 when I was exactly your age. Playing ball, practice (two a days in summer heat), studying, and trying to fit tinkering on the Bronco in there somewhere.
I bet your exhausted, giving up on hanging out with your friends sometimes to maintain this schedule. I was tired too man....but I still have my Bronco after all these years giving me a really cool/tangible connection to my youth, my Dad, my step Dad, and my late Grandfather. I hope your able to hang onto yours.
This time you are spending with the "Old Man" and the "Old Bronc" will be moments you will treasure and remember forever. Remember that when you and your Dad argue (aggressively discuss haha) over the build direction of the Bronco.
Finally, I didn't realize how lucky I was then to have my Dad, step Dad, Grandfather, Uncles, etc... to help me when I was young. Listen carefully here.....you will learn alot about life building a vehicle with your Dad whether those things have any automotive connection or not.
Sorry to go on and on....I just thing what your doing with your Dad is about the coolest damn thing in the world. Bravo young man!

We got a lot done today. Removed the harmonic balancer, timing chain cover, oil pan, and lots of old gaskets. We used a lot of gasket remover and did a lot of scrapping. Then hit the timing chain cover and oil pan with the pressure washer. Everything is real clean and reading to paint. Having a hard time getting the seal out of the the timing chain cover. Suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks for all the encouragement. Bronconut73, that was a nice note, thanks. These are good times!

Two other things we are kind of concerned about. One is rust we found when we removed the hood. The second is what are people using to keep the tube for the dip stick in the oil pan? There was blue silicone around it until we cleaned up the oil pan. Pictures are below.

We Got the motor back in this past Monday. We had a hard time getting the motor in with headers on. My Dad stayed in the garage until 3am bolting things on. We got it running Tuesday. We found out that there is an 89 intake on the motor. When it was started, water poured out of it. The 1970 gaskets didn't meet up with the intake. Once that was repaired, we had the exhaust pipes matched up with the new headers. I drove it to school on Friday. Pretty cool. Below are some pictures of the installation.
