So transmission fluid was going into the transfer case so much that the trans wouldn’t shift properly. Spent about six hours getting the six bolts out that hold the t-case to the adapter housing (Ford could not have made this vehicle more difficult to work on if they tried) and now it just sits there. I have been pounding away with a plastic dead blow and nothing. Does it need to twist first or should it go straight back? Did I miss something else? Any help would be appreciated.

If you got all 6 bolts out, you should be able to ease it backwards. There is a ring that can be a little sticky holding it in. Just a little pry and a wiggle should do it.
