Steering column question

I bought a kit years to make my steering shaft fit an after market steering box I purchased. Instructions Called to have the end of the column cut off and this piece from flaming river to be welded on.

I think my column is in ok shape. But I’m waffling on pulling my dash out. And I think you have to disassemble the column to get it out if I’m remembering reading that somewhere.

But will it be possible with that yolk on there? Or does the shaft ( the one inside the column) push out into the engine bay once the steering wheel is removed?

The shaft should be able to come out towards the front of the vehicle after the strg wheel, brg, blinker mechanism are all removed.

If it is a pre-73 column, then you only need to pull the steering wheel, and the shaft will fall out the bottom once the spring and upper bearing cone are free. Turn signal and bearing retainer can stay put. It does make it tricky to put it back in though.

I want to say 74+ is where the snap ring shows up. About the same time as the auto trans shifter, but I think it's just a coincidence.
