i have thought about mounting the sub in the center console firing down. it would be hidden, protected, and have something to fire against.

Done it before...

not really how i have been planning it. one 10 about 3" off the floor, mounted in the bottom of the console. I have a tuffy console and plan to cut the bottom out of it and fit the box inside it. it will look stock on the outside.

Those sound nice. I installed a JVC receiver in Tuff console. I ran two 6 by 9's and a ten inch sub floor model under the back seat. I installed two 4's and a pair of tweeters in my classic windshield motor cover. This works great and is not very easy to see.

JL audio make a slim 13.5 that I'm using under the seat (custom seat and mount) firing down. It requires lots of power (I'm running 700 watts to it) but it SHOULD sound great even at highway speeds with the top off. It would also work in the quarters, but it won't sound as good as down facing. Just my .02

I went with the Polk db6501 component set up front for now. Im gonna put either a 3 or 5 channel amp and add a sub later on. Now to figure out where to put these tweeters?

The Polk DB series is really great for the price.
I'm also a big fan of the Rockford Fosgate PBR amps. Tiny and powerful!

We manufacture enclosures that attach to your roll cage to house 6.5" speakers.
It's a good option for open topped rigs since you can mount your speakers more inline with your head.

I have some 8s in a custom box under the dash, plus a downward facing sub under the passenger seat. Sounds great, even topless on the freeway.

Another thing. I put the 6.5 in a panel like the box above. I have the tweeters in the upper part of the windshield. Should I enclose the panel to get better response? The tweeters are at -3db and I hear them way more than the mids.

Here is a system that has amazing sound and plenty of volume.

Alpine or Kenwood head unit.
Alpine 600w PDX-M6 mono amp.
2-10" Rockford P2's DVC 2ohm subs.

Alpine 4ch PDX-F4 amp
Hertz Energy ESK 6-1/2" components in the rear.
Hertz Energy ESK 5-1/4 components in the front.
