Still More Por15 Questions....

Ever wonder if the site name should be changed to include POR15? Anyway here are my questions. 1. Metal ready is and acid...so can we buy it elsewhere in bulk for cheap? 2. I read somewhere a long time ago that marine clean was the same as some locally available product so what was it? I cant seem to find those answers in the many POR15 ?'s . After doing my wifes 74 frame I have come away with a respect for the paint along with a desire for more affordable options for the prep agents. The paint covers great and a lil goes a long way , but I found I did not have enough metal ready and was not impressed with the marine clean....for the record I diluted the marine 2.5 to 1 the instruction said from 1 to 1 to 5 to 1 so I split the middle. I had already wire brushed/sanded frame. thanks in advance- ROB

I'm betting that marine clean is a phosphoric acid solution. Eastwood has similar stuff, but the price is about the same. You'd have to find a place that sells bulk chemicals to get it cheaper.

My $.02....

I think you guys are going way overkill on this stuff, I use Bill hirsh miricle paint ( same stuff as far as i can tell ) for prep work I wire brush and wipe with lacquer thinner, sometimes I just wire brush and sometimes I just paint.

Doors & tailgates: I wash the insides then pour the stuff in and turn the item over nenormous times sometimes if I can reach i will brush the seams, then repeat after about 45 minute if the paint comes out of cracks I'm confident I did a good job.

I did a test piece about 9 years ago, it was a 150 lbs rusty anvil that sits outside my garage I beat the crap out of this thing , after 9 years and no prep work it was in good shape, I just redid it about 2 months ago along with my yard trailer frame, no prep work & painted over the spiders.

Now if you get it on your skin, don't use lacquer thinner, all it does is burn you face and turn it red. I put globs of hand cream on the paint and let it sit fo about 5 minutes, the paint will scrape off.

I also think the POR-15 & Miracle paint is way over priced and is just some kind of industrial paint being repackaged and marked up. I just haven't found the source yet.

Me, I'm skeptical about anything you apply on top of rust. Lots of people say this stuff works though. I'd sandblast the thing down to clean metal, epoxy primer it, and then top coat it with a good paint. Maybe that's why it's taking me so long to get my rig built...Then again i'm from CA and we don't get the 'rust buckets' that you see so often on Ebay.

Anyone tried the Eastwood stuff?

All Over
Trying too hard

Everyone, I'm an auto body aide for a night class in southern Calif. and let me sum it up this way. POR-15 is good stuff. It also sticks to everything and doesn't come off at all. I use the metal prep stuff you can buy at Home Depot. Been using it for 15 years with no problems. Basically wire brush the surface to remove the big rust. Then repeat with the metal prep. Rinse and air dry and apply the POR-15. But depending on what your trying to accomplish I prefer the Hammerrite material sold at Home Depot in either qt cans or spray cans. Works great, has a good look to it and easy to touch up if you get chips. Just my 2 cents guys. If you buy the qt cans. Just thin it with a little thinner to use in your spray gun.

por - 15

while i had my auto parts store i sold dupont paint ...the question of painting over rust came up at a paint meeting one night ...the dupont rep. said that in dupont's mind you really never kill rust if you paint over it ,you just cut off the air which in turn stops the advance of the rust for a while ...
some products are better at cutting of the air than others .so he said dont just paint over it clean it as good as you can ...prep it and then paint it and hope for the best
i also agree with the guy who said it's just some industrial stuff that is in a small home package and over priced but if you can't idenify it you sometime have to pay the guy who knows...this is the part that always hits me the most .....but that por15 is good stuff...

POR-15 is not a repackaged product. Its manufactured by and distributed by Rustomotive in N.J. You will not find it under any other name. ALso your confusing two products. The Metal Prep is METAL-READY not MARINE CLEAN.

METAL-READY is comprised of Phosphoric Acid plus a few other items to help POR-15 adhire better.
