My long lost 76 Bronco had these locking gas caps.

My dad said they were an option when he bought the Bronco new.
They seem to be rare as I have not seen them in any of the thousands of bronco photos I have collected.
I'm trying to trick out my new 73 Bronco to look like my old 76 did.
I managed to find a couple of these on ebay but they don't fit. The diameter is right but I can't seem to push it in far enough to lock.

Does anyone have any experience with these? Did the filler neck change between 73 and 76?

Does anyone out there have these gas caps? And if so, did you also buy your green Bronco in southern Illinois some time around 1997? You'll know it's the right one if the floorboards are repaired with random scrap metal and the passenger door post is held together with the back from a metal office chair.

Those look more like the ones for a full size pick-up of that era (had them on my 75 F350). EB ones are usually smaller in diameter and strictly push ons.

I could be wrong though.

There is a difference in the earlier '66-'70 yrs ..'71--'76 had a longer reach into the filler neck .

I'm not sure that is relevant since I am talking about a 73 and a 76 - they should be the same. Although I have a suspicion that my new 73 has a forged VIN since it doesn't match my Marti report at all. I'm still searching for the VIN on the frame.

Well let me ask this do you have. a '76 around to try them on?Sence you have stated that they don't go in far enough on your '73.

I have a '76 and it needs the long reach also to fit it .

Wild Horses sells locking caps also .

Locking gas caps were really important back then during the gas wars and the price of gas tripling in a very few years. Availability was short which was worse than the gas price. so they started using locking gas caps. Then the thieves just started punching holes in the tanks. After that locking caps and the lack of fuel supply went away so the whole mess went away. Back then the Stant Brand of locking caps were very common. They were small diameter chrome and came in both neck styles that fit Broncos. I still have my old ones buried in the garage someplace.

I came across this thread by accident; I realize it's ancient.
Still, I have the answer. These caps came on my 76 Bronco when I bought it in 95.
The part number is Motorcraft XO-2137. I've not seen them on any other Bronco.

Here's a '72 Bronco with one of the mentioned Motorcraft gas caps. I really like the cap on some Broncos and It seals better than any Bronco cap that I know of.
