Summit Racing Truck Headers vs Mustang Shorty Headers

I'm about to order up a few parts from Summit for my 4R70W conversion. I've been reading up on the header situation and from what I can tell, WH and BC headers will work without question but are a little pricey. It sounds like Mustang shorty headers will work with some modifications.

it's really hard to tell from the pics, but I THINK these Summit Racing shorty truck headers just might work. My understanding is the problem with the Mustang shorty headers is that the drivers side collector points right into the frame rail as you can see in this pic of hedman mustand shorties. (drivers side header on the right)

compared to the Summit truck headers (driver's side header on the left)

the collector seems to be pointed straight down or slightly in towards the block with the summit truck headers. Unfortunately I think it would point right at the clutch linkage on a manual transmission truck but I think it might work for an automatic.

The Summit truck headers are $160. So, unless someone can definitively tell me they wont work, i'm gonna sacrifice $160 and see if we can find some cheap headers that work on our Broncos.

Your making this easy on me. I was just about to start researching this myself. But I have a 435.

Actually I am wrong. the mustang headers may be virtually the same as the ones I posted. Mine point straight back if memory serves correctly.

yep, the one's you linked to are the same as the ones in my picture. So i've got it completely backwards?

Those Hedman headers clear no problem? even with clutch linkage?

do you have any pics? This would be awesome if I could find a set of headers for $150 that are guaranteed to fit.

btw - what is it about the summit truck headers you dont think will clear? It wont clear the clutch linkage or the frame?

The summit truck headers look like they would conflict with the clutch linkage but I'm converting to an automatic so thats not a concern for me. The Hedman headers look like they would conflict with the frame rails to me.

They might work fine. It looks to me that they tend to point more toward the passenger side frame than the Hedmen set and that is usually the issue.

I run a ZF which uses the hydraulic clutch but I don't belevie they would be an issue at all. They are short enough that they wouldnt hit the linkage and you could bend the pipe up, down or around to clear.

I just went and looked and I have about 2.5 to 3" of clearance between the header and the bellhousing on the passengerside. Easy removal of the starter as well. My only complaint is that they aren't coated but you can send them to Jet hot for coating if you need it.

ok, well if you can confirm that those hedman headers work no problem then i guess there's no sense in experimenting with the summit truck headers. I will order up a set of the hedman's. Thanks much for the info.

I am not running the auto that you are, but I can't think of any reason they wouldn't work either. Let me know how well they fit afterwards, I think you will be pleased.

haven't quite gotten to the swap yet. They do look like they are going to fit. I'll report back here when I find out which will be in a month or two.

The problem with the mustang shortys is not the drivers side its the passanger side drops right on top of the frame rail. the driverside dumps right into clutch linkage.
