Super Celebration road trip

My son Walker, and I are anxiously anticipating Tuesday (4/8) when we will set out from the West Coast to drive to the Super Celebration in our '72 Bronco. The route for our road trip is pretty classic and straight forward, I-40 all the way from California to Tennessee, 7 days at an average of 350 miles per day.
Our question is what is your experience along that route as it relates to things to see and do. Obviously we will not have a lot of time to wander but will have a few hours per day to check out "stuff" along the way. Interesting hikes, weird tourist attractions, factory tours, etc.... Anything to make the drive fun along the way. There is a lot out there about I-40, but thinking local knowledge and experience will turn up some road trip magic.
Thanks for any thoughts, Steve and Walker
p.s. back out to the shop now to finish up prepping the Bronco. If all goes well we will be road testing it over to the WildHorses gathering in the AM (240 miles round trip) and then time to pack up and head across the country.

Sounds like a fun trip. Be prepared for I40 to be rough in OK.......always has been, always will be. Let me know what day and time you think you'll be in OK and I'll try to suggest some food and sights.

Speechless. That's a heck of a road trip. My sister in law is going the other way in an RV this summer. Just her and her kids.

Well, hopefully the old Bronco will just cruz on across the country, but nice to know help is out there. Thanks

Walker and I worked all day on the Bronco, thought we would be done by lunch but here it is after 11pm and we have just come in from the shop. Good news is it seems like it's ready go, so we are on the road at 5am for a good long road test up the the Bronco gathering at Wild Horses. Missed this gathering last year when after spending a week exploring 4x4 roads in Death Valley a nasty noise developed in the transfer case. Limped home and put the Bronco up on jack stands where it has rested for the last 12'months. Pretty excited to have it rolling again and at the same time a little stressed at the prospect of just far we expect it to take us over the next month.... Let the fun begin! And no matter what we will make it fun.

You can check out Meteor Crater in Winslow, AZ, you also will have some great scenery in Flagstaff, NM, Grab a bite to eat at the Big Texan Steak House in Amarillo, TX, Check out Graceland in Memphis, Tn too. Arkansas is a bit mundane to ride though, not much to see there that I remember...

Quick stop in Amarillo you can get a photo of Walker painting his name on one of the old cars buried nose first in the ground at Cadillac Ranch. Classic roadside stop.

Downtown Little Rock has a WWII diesel sub that you can tour, not the only place in America to walk through one, but a long way from the ocean. It is a good tour.

Sounds like an epic trip, best of luck.

Tried to do something like that last year. Drove from North Michigan en route to Super celebration. Well I sure hope you have better luck than I did. I had engine problems and a good friend had to come to my rescue. Made it to Super celebration but only for a half a day. I still had fun however. Thought about trying it again this year. this time from FL to SC. I hope you have a great time. My trip is below.

Envious of your road trip! Enjoy and have fun. Get off the I-40 exit at Thoreau in western NM and check out the rotting Broncos at the bar there (literally within sight of the freeway).

Its so much fun to drive these broncs on the trip. We took my 67 and my cousins 88 from sc to townsend last year and plan to do it again this year. If i trusted my wifes driving a little better id let her drive my newly aquired 96xl one owner up there as well. May leave 67 home next year and drive the 96.

Well.... up and out the door at 5am to head over to the Wild Horses gathering. This being our road test before packing and heading across the country to the Super Celebration. Things did not go well, within 1/4 mile of the house the engine started to feel like it was running out of gas. Stopped, started it back up, felt ok, hmmmm? Long story short without all the drama, we ended up back home an hour later with it running then cutting out, running then cutting out, frustrating. Really felt like a fuel issue. Decided to go to the gathering anyway without the Bronco, very disappointing, but determined to make the most of it.
What to do...
A year are two ago we pulled the tanks to inspect them (they were very clean w/o any gunk are rust) replaced all the soft hoses, pickup screens, and lines. Thinking thats not were the problem is we picked up up a new fuel pump replacing the factory original, installed that along with an additional metal fuel filter, pulled the carb and meticulously inspected and cleaned, set the float. Really did not find any problems. Started it up, felt great in the garage, out onto the road. Ran great for about a mile and then the same problem, back home we went. Pulling into the garage it was cutting out, again, like it was running out of fuel, so I cut the ignition, put the clutch in and coasted to a stop. Straight away pulled the carb top to check for fuel, a full bowl, not running out of gas. ???
Bad fuel? Gosh, maybe, but I did drive the car into town for some errands last week and it ran fine (25 miles or so) and we drove it around for 5-8 miles the night before attempting the Wild Horses drive.

I probably should say at this point that this is a very stock Bronco, original 302 with 40,000 miles (it has been a garage queen all its life) and the only modifications are a set of headers and a Petronix billet distributor.

At this point Im a bit stumped.. I have gone over the wiring to the coil and distributor and it all seems fine. The coil does have 12v and all the connectors are soldered not just crimped. Im missing something, any thoughts?
Road trip is on hold with the clock a ticking, yikes!
p.s. bax's post regarding his experience with a Super Celebration road trip was the 13th response to my post, not that I'm superstitious, just saying....orses drive.

I have added a couple of photos from the Wild Horses gathering and hopefully they have come through in a proper fashion.

I do want to thank everyone for there thoughts and comments on "stuff" to see along the way across the country. We will be making this road trip so please do continue to post up any ideas. Hopefully, we will make it with the Bronco! And, hopefully we will not need to call on Bart or anyone else along the way. Really do appreciate the generosity that has been offered up. Thanks, Steve
