Hi,
Has anyone ever installed a new car style of "Telescoping Steering Column" into a classic Bronco?

I've got a good tilt from a 78 Bronco that I might be installing but was just wondering if anyone has ever attempted a telescoping steering column. I've seen alot of them on ebay, they don't look too expensive but some serious tinkering would be required.

I looked into it Chris but ended up going with a Ididit stainless tilt column that was designed as a direct replacement for the original Bronco column with a colapsable lower shaft instead. My 72 had a solid lower shaft and Dana and Melissa at the Bronco hut recommended that what ever I decided to do I needed to put a colapsable lower shaft in for safety reasons. I was only looking into the telescoping column because I hadn't seen any of them in Broncos and wanted to have something no one else did but Melissa and Dana had this column in stock and needed it quick so I went with the stainless tilt only. After installing the new column I don't think the Broncos design gives much point for a telescoping column, you can adjust the seat to have the steering wheel almost hit your chest so I am glad I didn't go to the added expense, but it would be a cool option just to say you got it. Good luck in your decision and if you haven't talked to Dana or Melissa give them a shout, I know Dana has probably attempted installing one or knows someone that has and is a mountain of knowledge on Broncos.

Telescoping on the inside, as in driving position adjustment. That will probably be a new one.

Changing the shaft into a colapsable one (for safety) is fairly common when doing power steering conversions. It actually makes lining up the shaft easier as well.

I have a tilt telescoping column in my 32 ford out of a corvette my grandpa put in in the late 70's. I believe it is out of a 76 vette that had been t boned . I always wondered how a setup like that in a EB would feel.

The '67 that my little brother used to own came with a tilt/telescoping column... I think it was out of an older continental or some other luxury car.

I don't know what all went into the conversion, but it was nice to have with the 5 pt harnesses he had.

My 79 ElDorado had one. Kind of cool, plus it was a 3 speed column shift. Probably could be adapted fairly easy, although I never really used it much. Just set it once and forgot about it.

I have one in my 68 GT350, and I have a spare column from an old Cougar I parted out. They are not that simple, you have to run a vacuum canister, door switch and some other wiring for ignition cut off.

I think you would also have to run a fairly small steering wheel as when it tilts away it would hit the dash.
