The Broncos I should have bought

I was recently given a box of old stuff from my room when I was a kid. Looking through it, I found an old Truck Trader from 1994. I had just turned 19.

I remember what was going on at the time. I was home from college, I had blown the 350 in my 1980 Blazer, and instead of rebuilding it, I was going to buy a Bronco. Or so I thought.

My Dad was having none of it! "You don't buy an older truck than you have right now" and "Those Broncos are old-technology pieces of $#!t". Were his arguments.

I think it was $900 to rebuild the 350, which I did. I still have the Blazer. (probably also spent another $2000 that summer on lift kit, wheels, tires- what an idiot)

I think I was making around $7 an hour, so at these prices, these Broncos would have taken all of my Summer income.

Anyway, I just thought I would share...

I know how you feel. In 1990 I saved up summer job money to buy a truck. I found a 1968 EB in my town that was a nice solid driver. I talked the guy into $1500, but my dear mother would have nothing of it. Similar to what the OP mentioned, she did not trust it and felt it was too unsafe, poor gas mileage, etc, etc.

That Bronco would probably be a $15,000 ride today, and to this day I remind her of that from time to time. Yes, I'm still bitter. ;D

Wow...that takes me back. My interest in EBs started in the late 90s, as I was still working on my undergrad degree. I wish I could have kept my '71 and '79 Broncos. But, being a struggling college student, my pockets weren't deep enough.

On a side note: speaking w/ our Board president. He mentioned he donated his old EB many years back. That would of been a good keeper. Bet it sold for a song too.

This was years before Gone in 60 Seconds came out and drove the price of fastbacks through the roof. That would be a $65,000 car today. When you make $4.50 an hour at Little Ceasars, $15,000 may as well be $1,000,000.

My dad had an original blue and white 1977 ranger uncut. Very nice condition. He sold it for 4,750 in 1994.

In 1977, when I was 16, I had an opportunity to buy a 1968 dark green gt350 drag car, no interior other than the driver's seat and dash, motor was blown but the 4 speed was still good. He wanted $750, talked him down to $600 and a buddy had a 289 he was going to sell me for $300. Mustang interiors abounded in the junkyards at that time. Father would not let me do it as I was just coming off a suspended license for going 95 in a 55 in my mom's Mercury Monarch. But I do own my uncle's 1969 Bronco Sport wagon that I inherited in 1995!

My Dad bought a 1970 Mach I 428SCJ (R code) in around 1990 from one of the moms of a kid I played baseball with. At the time it seemed expensive at $4000. The Mustang was her DD. She was buying a new Honda Prelude and needed cash. It needed a motor rebuild, but otherwise it was perfect. He sold it a few years later for $8000. That was the one to keep. I still remind him about that one.

My old man sold three rusted out broncos to a guy for 500.00 back in 1992. Craziness I tell you craziness.

I bought my 74 bronco in 93 or 94, a family friend found it for me, it came from West Monroe Louisiana and I paid 2,800$ for a 74 that was v8, automatic, power steering, 3.5" lift and rolling on slots. That price was delivered to me here in MI and it was rust free except for a little in the floors where the prior owner covered them in fiberglass.

I think it has been the only vehicle that I have ever owned that gained value.

Missed the boat on a 69 Bronco around 1989-90. All done with fresh paint new everything. Needed wiring finished. 5,000. Thought the guy was crazy!

Just for fun, I went to the inflation calculator and put in $3500 in 1994. It roughly calculates to $5900 in today's dollar.

Broncos have definitely exceeded simple inflation.

The winter of 76. my local ford dealer had a new ranger sitting on the lot that had been there for about 2 months. I wanted it bad and put my bone stock 65 corvette up for sale. The day after I sold it, we had a pretty good snow, so was really looking forward to go getting it. The snow had other peoples attention also...I got there to buy it and it had been sold early that morning to a man needing to take his kids to school and him to work in the snow. I went about a mile down the road and bought a new Renegade Jeep cj5 with the 304, I had the jeep for about 8 years and really used and abused it. But always wished I would have gotten that bronco.
