Well, in most cases probably not. But in my case, this is what things looked like when I pulled the factory rug. ;D

Of course, it wasn't all perfect. Passenger side rear wheel well looks like it's had some water collection. Seam sealer had been used, looks like it could do with some more.

The pic makes the surface rust look way worse than it looks in real life (it had detergent on it). After it dries I'll make a decision on whether I'll hit it with the sander and a bit of touch up.

So all in all, feeling good. Going to pull the front rug this weekend (not destroying, it's all going right back into place carefully after cleaning). Up there is where the rust is hiding.

Accidentally left off all the pics of the passenger wheel well. Here they are.

I was about to say. I thought my eyes were going on me. “What’s he talking about??? That doesn’t look bad at all!”

I was thinking,

Ooo NO, not another horror story about the buying unseen vehicles!!!!

Sometimes it works out good, but most times it doesn’t.

Agree completely. For the peace of mind alone.

I was extremely thorough and extremely lucky.

I would not think about this, I would just DO IT. if you don't you'll always be wondering what's under that mat, gotta catch it early man!! ;) nice ride!

Boo! I was expecting to come in and see something nightmarish or soul-rending at the very least.

QUESTION:

[preamble-I know nothing about anything]

I've decided I'm going to hit the rust spots with a rotating sander and 80-grit paper; mostly because that's what I have to work with. I'm assuming this should be enough to get the rust off and will likely bring daylight to some bare metal.

Rust off, metal shown....what's my next step?

1. I'm going to fill seams with sealer (3m auto) yes?

2. Then, is there any particular primer I should be using over the sealer and the bare metal (especially considering it may have minor pit spots/ie need a little filler)?

3. Finally, what's the best place to get some brush-on auto paint that will closely match original for me to place over the primer?

BONUS: And this will rust protect the spots, yes?
