Thoughts on altering front crossmember.

I am having some clearance issues with my steering and have not found a solution other than altering my front crossmember. I plan on cutting about 2 1/2" off the bottom and fabbing it with 3/16" steel. Anyone see a problem with this? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks,

I've seen that done and have also seen them successfully removed completely and then replaced with a piece of 2x4 or 3x4 tube welded between the rails just behind the front bumper as the new crossmember.
