I would LOVE to make the Bronco Take-over at Silver Lake this year. To that end, I bought a set of sort of baldies yesterday and picking up a set of 15 x 10 steel rims this Friday. I understand low tire pressure is important. I'm thinking about running tubes and maybe screwing the tires to the rims ($50 tires, $80 rims) and maybe some minor basic cutting to the tires. Am I on the right track, y/n, any wise advice? Don,(Sanndmann3), what say you? Or would I be better of running the rims and tires I bought for the street? (last pic) Thanks for any input. Howard in beautiful west Michigan

Don has THE tires for sand that still work on the street IMO. Too bad they stopped making them.

I think I'd just run the street tires to not have to deal with the potential issues with screws getting into the tubes if you go that route but I don't feel strongly going one way or the other.

Could you run the baldies without screws or tubes? If you could I'd probably go that route. Low pressure is about 10 psi (hot--I pick-up a couple psi on the two mile drive from camp to SLSD) for load range C tires. 15" rims have a pretty good safety bead. The lower profile street tires would work but just wouldn't get as wide. I'm not sure about the safety bead on the street setup. I popped a tire off the bead on my diesel but it was all operator error.

The dunes open 1 April. Maybe you could try the street tires before the takeover and see how they work? I'm confident you will be able to go just about anywhere. Test Hill will be just that--a test of flotation, traction and power.

Hope to see you there.

Bald, low-pressure tires work great in the sand. Lot's a contact and not a lot of digging, so you're less likely to bury yourself.

If you run tubes do you really need screws too?

Probably depends on how low a pressure you run. The lower the pressure, the tire can rotate on the rim over time. (would it tear out the valse stem from inner tube?)

I run my Baja Claws around 4 psi up front and 3 in back. I have put an alignment mark on the tire/valve stem and checked it a day later... 90 degrees out...

What I would recommend is run tires without tubes or screws and 10/12 psi. Then start dropping the pressure a couple psi at a time and see how you do. Craig is spot on that pressure can go up as they heat up.

Worst case Howard is you might pop the bead off the rim... Just give me a call and I'll show you how my onboard air works... ;D (I'm planning on going to BTO this year... yay!)
