Tried to talk to Mark at Toploader heaven about my three speed and he interrupted me mid sentence and said he can't diagnose over the phone. I never got through my question, all he said was, "If you want to buy a kit, I can help you."

I gave on up on my question, which was what gear oil he recommended for my climate, and why it was harder to shift when warm versus cold.

Then I asked if he had an opinion on throwout bearings and he said in a loud voice "No" and then hung up the phone.

All I can say is what an asshole and if I lived closer, I would go by and talk to him in person.

I have purchased from him before, but never again.

Wow!!! I guess I should be happy that he never replied to my questions. I might have gotten an dressing down. Not good bedside manner.

Some small business owners are "short" with people on phone calls when a specific merchandise order isn't involved and the caller seems to want to chat about nothing special. Maybe at the same time other callers were on hold waiting to chat. Not saying this is what happened. The guy obviously doesn't grasp the consequences of being rude. When I make a call like this seeking advice I've learned from experience to always ask the guy or gal if they are too busy to talk and if so when is a good time to call back to discuss "some business I might be sending your way." This usually makes them less short and rude.

That was uncalled for no matter what his excuse. Time to find a vendor who will appreciate new business.

You are right, I called David and he was very nice and answered my question. Gave me some advice, and wished me to have a good day.

I still think that is no way for a business to treat someone on the phone, he could have just said can I call you back when I have a minute. If the guy was to busy to answer the phone he shouldn't have answered it.

It definitely doesn't encourage a follow-on-purchase. Makes you wonder what response you would receive if you had a problem with the items.......perhaps the guy has enough business he doesn't need anymore....

If they are in the buisness they should answer any calls no matter how basic with expertism and kindness. If their reputable they should also be able to run the buisness properly without running machines and juggling phones. If thats the case they should at least have a kind and friendly voice mail message that they can't currently take your call.

A lot of people are swamped, but that is no excuse, if you look at the guys that help people out they are the ones that dont even need to advertise, like Jay at Broader people just know to go to him, and that alone is worth more than any advertising can buy. While they may not make a sale this time, you remember that they where the guys that helped you out, and you will be quick to recommend them to people that are ready to buy. Further many times people don't even know they need to buy something and that is where helping them out comes in, many times a potential customer just needs to understand it so they can come to the realization that they need to purchase items. With all that said, do try to keep in mind that he may have caught his wife with the trailer parks Don Won, everyone is entitled to a bad day, but you would think if one was in that mood they would just leave the phone alone, sometimes doing no business is better than doing bad business.

Fairlane, put yourself in the other person's shoes for just a moment. Recognize that time is money and the other person may have been in the middle of operating precision machinery or juggling a countershaft into position when the phone rang. Understand that the questions your were asking are common knowledge to anyone that has read both the owner's manual and Helm service manual. Don't take this as a lecture but in the future when in need of technical support, first read everything you can get your hands on, then compose a well written email asking specific questions. Calling should be a last resort.

I should have realized my question was common knowledge and moronic, therefore I provoked Mark into an asshole response. I feel I owe him an apology, I wonder if I call and try to apologize he will appreciate the gesture?

I do research my questions extensively and rarely "bother" business owners who specialize in what I'm working on. How many times do members on this site ask the same tired question over and over? Some responses to them are "Use the search feature" and others just simply answer the question.

Paul (Dirt DonK) from Wild Horses is an example of good business and patience with people on this forum. I have seen him answer the same question over and over, when the answer may be in an owners manual or Helm service manual. Of course we all have in our possession a owners manual and Helm manual……stupid me for not checking there first.

My questions ( stupid or not) would have taken all of 30 seconds of his precious time, which he will have plenty of, if he chooses to act this way to other potential or current customers.

I stare at a screen all day for work...I really really value being able to pick up a phone a talk to people about broncos or other hobbies. While you might have been able to find an answer online somewhere, there are those of us that would rather actually still talk to a human, especially someone who claims to be an expert rather than sift through a bunch of posts from armchair jockeys who may or may not know what they are talking about.

I disagree with that VT Don said and I hope you call the other Toploader people and get all the help you need.

They must have a Chinese or Japanese Don Juan roaming around their trailer park...
