Transmission filter question

Hello, I have a 74 with a C4 transmission and I have a seal leaking behind the shift lever and am going to replace it. the truck has 54,000 original miles on it and I was going to go ahead and change the filter and the oil while I was in there. I have always heard that after it has a bunch of miles on it, the filter should never be changed. Is this correct or would it be messing anything up to change it. The fluid looks good and does not have any kind of burnt smell or discoloration.
Thanks for your help

I have always been told to filter change at about 50k. flushing the trans on one of those flush machines is what I have been told not to do with high miles.

Just be sure to put the check ball back in the correct passage behind the filter.... That's where the "never change the filter" comes from, trans is really unhappy and dies without it.

I would change the so-called filter. in the Bronco it is not really a filter as it is a large particle screen. Be wary when you remove the filter there is a little tab sticking out on the side of the filter. when you remove the filter that tab holds back a metal valve and a spring. those parts will just pop out and drop in your pan if you are not careful. Those parts have to go back in place in the order and direction they came out. That valve and spring are under pressure and held in place by the filter.

That filter isn't much finer than a window screen. Made to catch June bugs.
A Bronco C4 is really easy to maintain. Just drain the pan through the fill tube every oil change, and replace about two quarts. This may sound a bit unorthodox, but it keeps the transmission clean, and the additives up. I don't even bother with the filter.
