Trick to putting gas in the rear tank?

Filling the aux tank is pretty easy. Can’t seem to find the right angle to get the gas nozzle from turning off the pump when I’m trying to fill the main. Plus I pour gas down the side of my truck every time. Tips? Thanks.

Check BOTH of your vent tubes. One should be under fender well and another running forward up frame. That is if you have that set up and tank. Definitely sound like a venting problem tho.

Depends on your set up . Stock or not. Either way you should be able to find vent tubes coming off of your fill neck and tank. Make sure they are not kinked or pinched somehow or simply plugged. The gurus on here could probably give you more detailed tricks or location for everything you are looking for.

I generally hold the lever by hand just before the slowest position. Kinda sucks with a 20 gallon fill-up when it's 15 degrees out, but I don't end up with fuel jumping outta the filler neck.

Some pumps seem to work for me on the lowest setting if you hold the end of the spring (ya know, the spring on the nozzle before they angle down) with the top of the filler neck. It catches on the lip where the steel is rolled over. Now, in that position, its half falling out and I'm too paranoid not to watch it, so I'm standing outside anyway, but that generally works for me, and with only a minimal amount spilling down the side.

The nozzle had a spring on it, not the fill cover that gets pressed in. My tanks are stock

Ok I’ll check it out. Thanks

The aux tank didn’t need any special treatment. The main tank didn’t want to fill, even at the slowest fill speed.

might want to pull neck and make sure there isn't part of a locking gas cap inside the tube. seen that one a few times

What he said ^^^
Neither of my Broncos like the fuel evap nozzle ; no problem filling with the standard nozzle or out of 5 gal gas can .
What year is your Bronco and is the rear tank "stock'factory " ? Some of the later years had a tank design change .
Oh - my local gas station used to have a 18" long piece of 4x6 laying next to a pump ; drive the driver side rear tire up onto that - it makes a surprising difference. The new owner isn't as smart and used it for a door prop - LOL

Hey, a blast from the past! We haven't had a good "can't fill" discussion in awhile now.
Unfortunately smittymike, this used to be an all-too-common occurence and you would have been in very good company.
You're actually lucky it's only one tank at this point! On my '71 both tanks gave me trouble in the beginning. Luckily I was young and laid back and never in a hurry, because my gas stops were twenty minutes minimum. With regular nozzles and then vapor recovery nozzles. Didn't make a difference.
Now my '68's rear tank (aftermarket, one tank only) is half-way good, but gives me fits every other fill-up.

If you've got a '70 or later you have tanks with vapor recovery vents going to the charcoal canister. Early ones did not.
Very early Broncos did not even have fill-vents on the tanks (at least the front aux tank anyway) and in my experience it doesn't seem to make a difference what year or type of system you have. Some just give fits.

With mine though, the "cure" if that's what it was, was simply to replace the rubber filler tube and fill-vent hose with new. The only other thing I did was to gently blow some air into the evap lines. But I never saw any clue that they were clogged. Just did it "because" I had them off.
I just replaced the hoses because they looked haggard and like they wanted to be changed. Not because I thought this was the issue.
But sure enough, the very next fill up went like a dream and I never had a problem at all after that.

So the moral of my story is, check your fill and vent hoses. And if they look even remotely old, change them out. Maybe you'll have the same good luck I did.

Pump with the hose upside down. Or pull back and aim the nozzle into the back wall of the fill tube instead of down the pipe.

RE: Vapor recovery gas nozzles >> I had success trying a different pump or station. Some of the pumps are not set up correctly.

I've had varying luck with different pumps as well. Usually though the upside down trick that Rusty just mentioned sometimes worked with the '71, but does not work with the '68.

Don’t forget the “body rock” when filling the rear tank to get it filled all the way.
