More info now. I want to keep a somewhat stock appearance under the hood of my 77. Im running an 87? 5.0 ho motor that has the 4 bolt crank pulley. Im only turning an alt and the water pump. Timing cover and water pump are both 77. Is there a pulley combination available that can be sourced at a local salvage yard? Trucks...cars?
Ideas are welcomed.

Either you get an aftermarket harmonic with 50 oz balance or you can redrill a 3 bolt pulley with 4 Holes to match I never seen a 4 bolt pulley bolt on and match the bronco water pump

Agreed, balancer and crank pulley go together on Ford small block applications. If you really want to keep the front of the motor old Bronco style you need to change the balancer and match the pulleys.

We have had really good results with these. I like that you can change the balance if you swap motors.

SOOO.. If I can locate a set of factory E.B. pulleys and have a machime shop redrill the crank pulley to four bolt, they should work with the 50 oz balancer that is on this engine? and everything will line up? Seems do-able.

While this idea seems reasonable the offset of the balancer will be the problem even if you drill the 4 bolt pattern into the pulley. I could be wrong. I'm sure someone will let me know but the 87 balancer sticks out much further than the 60-70s models. Bottom line if you have a machine shop at your disposal you can make just about anything work because you can go all custom with spacers etc. This is why I recommend the balancer I did. It saves most people a lot of time and frustration.

Pulleys

oldiron,

Jim is right on the balancer. Do not drill classic pulleys to fit the four bolt balancer. Just get the balancer that will accommodate both style of pulley to keep the classic pulley look on a modern engine. I did the same to keep the V-belt configuration and like the balancer. Good luck.

Ford made 2 damper/crank pulley combinations in EBs. The early type through '68 had a lip on the pulley that fits into the recess in the damper. The late '69-'77s has a lip on the front of the damper that fits in the hole in the crank pulley. Make sure you get one that has the lip on the damper. An '87 damper won't work period. As Paul said it sticks out further so the belts can't track straight and the timing marks are on the wrong side. Early Mustang parts houses sell several 3 hole 50 oz. dampers for late 302 cranks to be compatible with the EB front dress.

The aftermarket dampers like the one mentioned come with a hub-centric adapter ring to let them fit both types of pulleys.
The damper has the recess, so it automatically fits with the early style pulley. When used with the later pulley you install the ring to center the pulley.

Some companies use steel rings, while others use plastic. Ours is steel and personally I prefer that, though I don't know how much actual stress is put on the ring if the bolts remain tight.
However, if the bolts are not tightened sufficiently, or come loose, the plastic one won't hold the pulley centered for long.
