VIN build month discrepancy

Just picked up a project Bronco, sold as a 1968. The VIN on the frame and glovebox match and match the particulars of the vehicle. (289, no power brakes or steering etc) The only question is the build month code. D00301. The data bases say that is not a valid code for 1968 but matches one from 1976. Has anyone run into this?

D00301 would indicate March 1968 or Jul/Aug 1976. The distinguishing thing is going to be the engine code. The 289 engine code in the 1968 VIN is N. In 1976-77 the only engine code possible was G.

C111999 should really say D11999. This chart is more accurate than most.
