What are the visual differences between the two? I am about to purchase a 71 and dont see any markings on the axle housing.

The 30 will have King pins and the 44 will have ball joints. Look at the end of the housing, where the knuckle is, king pins have four bolts on the top and bottom, whereas the balljoint will be smooth and round and may or may not have a grease zerk fitting.

From WH web site:

Front Ends
66-77 Broncos came stock with the Dana 30 (66-71 1/2) and the Dana 44 (71 1/2-77). In 1976, Ford equipped the Dana 44 with disc brakes. The easiest way to identify which front end you have is to look at the steering knuckles. The Dana 30 front end uses king pins in the steering knuckles which are held in with four bolts on top and bottom. The Dana 44 uses ball joints which are held in with large nuts on top and bottom.
