I am new to the forum and am in the market for a 'reasonably priced' winch, has anyone ever heard of the vortex brute 10000 lb.. I found on e-bay just searching and it says it has a 2 yr warranty and posts good specs. anybody?
I am a wheeler on budget, so I have to look for the best for the least dollar.
I'm willing to take a chance on some lesser brands, just curious if anyone else has seen or heard of it.

Never heard of them

If you can find a used Warn 8274, rebuild it, and it will provide you with years of service.

You can buy a new Warn M8000 for $500 if you watch the sale bills at the 4x4 shops online. Free shipping a lot of the time as well.

Mile Marker winches work, they're just slow as $#it.

Keep watching the classifieds on the 4x4 forums, and you may dumb luck into a good deal. My buddy got a HS9500i with new Amsteel rope for $600 last year. (That's ~1/2 price) and it only had 1 season on the winch, rope was new.

I agree with the 8274...thats exactally what I did. I live bout an hour from the portland Warn factory and took it to them, they went through it upgraded the motor, new solenoid, brake, and basically new everything, gave me a new remote (cause the old ones dont have one that work with the new solenoids) all for about 400 bucks...works perfectly and its the last one I will ever own...the 8274's are fricken bullet proof.

thanks for the direction, I have'nt neede a winch yet,but..... With new 35" tires and lockers front and rear I see it coming. As far as Mile Marker winches is the quality on them good? I hear alot of people call anything but Warn junk.

thanks for the info. Why is it that everything but WARN is junk to most people. Is their stuff that much better than everything else. Are the mile marker winches good quality? Forgive my ignorance i'm a newbie.

Ramsey makes good stuff, but in the last couple of years, they've priced themselves right out of the competition.

T-Max winches are OK, used to be made in Australia, now made in China from what I've read.

One of my friends just put a Black Mountain winch on his wife's Jeep, it looks a lot like a rebadged MM to me. He says it works well enough, a little slow though. Cheap as hell. It may make a good 'make due' winch until you can afford a better one, then you can put it on the front of your trailer or something.

I don't call them junk, but with winches, like about everything else, you get what you pay for. Some of the bargain winches will work just fine, and may last a long time, but they're generally much slower and will pull lots more amps than a comparable Warn.

With the type of wheeling I do when I need to use my winch, I really NEED to know it will always work - I have a Warn. That said, any working winch is better than no winch at all.
